Would ya happen to have an idea how I could connect to a newsgroup server through Nomad and/or Time Warner?

Just get a newsreader (outlook express has one for text posts) or use Google Groups.
If you want binaries, forget about it, neither NCSU nor Time Warner have any kind of retention on data. 11/29/2006 1:25:23 PM |

time warner has like 3 days of retention (good enough for porn). If you really want binaries though, there are several newsgroup providers with month retention for ~$10/mo 11/29/2006 1:32:14 PM |

I dont particularly care for web based ones. Thanks mellocj, I will give the Time Warner one a try. I have used newgroups with Cox and Charter in the past through Thunderbird and Outlook Express. It would be nice if NCSU still had them, as they can be quite a usefull resource. 11/29/2006 3:15:33 PM |

NCSU doesn't have a news server anymore? They used to back when I went there (1999 was the last time I was on Resnet)
I can't say enough good things about usenetserver.com
~60 day retention rate. completion is never an issue. 10 concurrent connections allowed. and I routinely download at 6 MBytes a second here at work (Around 800-1000KB/sec at home)
All for about $13 a month. I used to try and bother with TWC's servers, but they become completely unusable about 3 times a year.
usenetserver + newsleecher FTW!
I wasn't trying to make this an ad, but if anyone signs up, I get a $5 referral credit.

FYI I use this for academic stuff, not for downloading software or pictures, so paying $13 is a little steep to check out sci.technology or alt.agriculture 11/29/2006 3:55:29 PM |

oh.
well then just use google groups then.
or you could try forte APN

They've got a 7GB/month plan for only $2.95/month. with 1000 day text group retention. ] 11/29/2006 3:57:22 PM |

Seriously try out google groups.
It's honestly far better than any standalone reader I've ever found. I use it first and foremost whenever I have any real technical issues. 11/29/2006 5:25:24 PM |

speaking of, anyone know of any open news servers that do have decent retention for binary posts? 11/29/2006 5:43:55 PM |

Google Groups to search. Outlook to subscribe to text-based. Forte for binary-based.
Unless you like being paranoid, I wouldn't download anything from newsgroups. Almost worse than BitTorrent when it comes to spreading new, unknown crap. 11/29/2006 5:52:24 PM |

What exactly do you mean by this? In a slow month I download .5 terabyte of stuff from newsgroups and I've never gotten a virus.
Actually, nevermind. I see where you reccommended forte for downloading binaries, so clearly you don't have the first clue what you're talking about on the subject.]11/29/2006 7:15:40 PM |

As far as software goes, I use newsleecher. If you're a power user, it's awesome. It might not be the absolute best software (I think it's close) but the thing that can't be beat about it is it comes with a supersearch service. The makers constantly index everything that gets posted on usenet (think google, for alt.binaries) The days of downloading 4 million headers a day from alt.binaries.hdtv are a thing of the past. Just type in what you're looking for, pick how many days back you want to search, and then you get filterable results instantly. It's awesome.
(and no I don't get a referral if you buy this, I just love it that much)] 11/29/2006 9:26:47 PM |
