nokia 6255i through alltel...i was putting in another mmc card the other day and noticed an extra slot...sure enough, the phone has slot for a sim card (it may be just a dummy slot, but the gold connectors are all there
i wasn't aware that this phone was available for GSM...upon googling, it appears that it was indeed available for GSM...my question is this - is it possible that my phone can operate on GSM and CDMA, or did they probably just try to save money by manufacturing all of the phones exactly the same? i don't know enough about cell phone design to know if the CDMA/GSM hardware thing is even possible 12/4/2006 3:38:19 PM |

would it need to be unlocked for someone else's sim card to work? 12/4/2006 6:18:19 PM |

dunno. Worst case senario you put the sim card in, boot it up and it says invalid sim card. 12/4/2006 6:45:00 PM |

I know verizon wireless has a handful of phones that have GSM capability thru a SIM card for traveling overseas, but they don't work on US networks. it may be the case with yours as well. I know the nokia website doesn't say anything about GSM capability for that model 12/4/2006 8:31:28 PM |

Quote : | "The R-UIM is a dual-mode solution that can store both GSM provisioning and CDMA provisioning on a single card. CDMA subscribers can insert the dual-mode R-UIM card into a GSM phone and instantly have all of their subscription data available in a GSM network. When used with a GSM handset, the R-UIM operates like a GSM 11.11 Subscriber Identity Module (SIM). For international travelers, the R-UIM allows roaming across CDMA and GSM networks with the same multimode terminal. " |
so...if i understand that, it's a essentially a SIM card that works in both CDMA and GSM phones?12/4/2006 11:07:11 PM |

I guess. But then R-UIM can be CDMA only. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-ruim-card.htm 12/5/2006 12:25:11 AM |
