this time of year, you should be able to get one quickly. the rush hits closer to summertime when all the church kids have to apply for ones to go to latin america.

where are you going?

haha, true enough. have fun, i actually have haitian family, strangely enough (married into the family, ha, like i look haitian ). they really need help there. I'm trying to decide when to go work on a similar project right now myself, but I've already been through the carribean doing work so it's time for something new.

good to see that not everyone simply views it as a cesspool where simply setting foot on the island will give you a disease.

"Americans are reminded of the potential for spontaneous protests and public demonstrations that can occur at any time, day or night, and may result in violence. American citizens are advised to take commonsense precautions and avoid any event where crowds may congregate. Visitors and residents must remain vigilant due to the absence of an effective police force in much of Haiti; the potential for looting; the presence of intermittent roadblocks set by armed gangs or by the police; and the possibility of random violent crime, including carjacking and assault. Kidnapping for ransom remains a serious threat, with more than 50 American citizens, including children, kidnapped over the past year.

Travel can be hazardous within Port-au-Prince. Some areas are off-limits to embassy staff, including downtown Port-au-Prince after dark. U.S. Embassy personnel are under an embassy-imposed curfew and must remain in their homes or in U.S. government facilities during the curfew. The embassy has limited travel by its staff outside of Port-au-Prince and therefore its ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens outside of Port-au-Prince is constrained. The UN stabilization force (MINUSTAH) remains fully deployed and is assisting the government of Haiti in providing security. "

I just got mine. It takes 8 weeks if you don't expedite and 2 weeks if you do. Fill out the application and if you're on campus the best place to go is the post office on Oberlin across from the harris teeter, they'll do your picture and process the passport there. Make sure to have everything when you get there though, including old and expired passports.

Allow AT LEAST 2 months. Seriously. I just got a new passport last spring and the people at the Wilmington post office were total fucktards. They didn't give me a receipt or anything, didn't know how to do a government passport, completely worthless basically. I was so worried they'd fucked it up beyond repair and I'd never get it. Miraculously, I did get my passports on time though.

I would suggest going to the Garner post office. They are quite nice there and quickly processed mine.

It all depends on how much you are willing to spend. I got my passport and visa to China 5 days after I sent it off. I used a passport service company.

for the bahamas:

http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/brochures/brochures_1229.html#b

is that outdated? am i reading it right, because from what i understand as long as you are not traveling via air, you can use the birth certificate to get in.....i.e. cruise

also, i don't seem to have my "original" birth certificate since i was born in TX.....i remember when i got my license it was a hassle to get the one i have.....any advice?

^^^It says you can use a birth certificate, even if you're travelling by air.

To get your birth certificate, I'd call your parents.

My wife applied for one like the week before Thanksgiving and had it in-hand in about 4-5 weeks, which I thought was pretty quick.

I'd allow 2 months, though.

And WTF that stupid thing was seriously like $100 or more after they charge you to take a snapshot...I swear the one I got in '03 was like $50-60

I would get it expidited just in case. They say on the form or whatever that it can take up to three months. I got mine in 10 days but it was literally an act of congress to do it

So that's why Pelosi's 100 hours is behind schedule.

everyone in my office applied for their passports by dec 8th and had them expidited. the shortest turn around time was 5 days, the longest was 8 days.

my boss applied for his renewal, not expidited, and it took 3 and a half weeks.

I actually pulled some strings and got some lady at the Bob Dole building (or whatever it's called) to next-day airmail mine to one of her friends that worked up in DC who made my passport in a few hours after he got it at 10am, and had it back to me the next morning at 10am. So like 48 total hours.

Of course, my trip was like 4 days away and I was dumb for waiting that long...and it costed me out the nose.

^^ For getting passports, probably. But when it comes to getting visas to questionably friendly countries with a quickness, they are priceless.

confirmed today: a photo id and an original birth certificate will suffice for the bahamas (as long as travel is not via plane)

Cruises only recommend a passport so if you're one of the idiots who get stranded at the port in another country/territory you can fly back into the U.S. If you dont stop by ports on your cruise, or know how to actually use a watch, dont worry bout it.

whats with the rule about traveling by air?

so if you're going by a commercial boat you don't need one?

you don't need one to get on the boat, but you can't get through customs at your destination without a passport.

I got my passport in January 9 days after filling out the application, and I didn't bother to get it expedited.

already spoke with the captain, the crew is covered by the boats "passport", I'm not gonna need one personally unless I leave the resort

most of the time we'll be at sea anyway, the resort is just for docking in bad weather

You'll get the RFID-chipped passport. Wrap that shit in aluminum foil before you go to the airport, so that the chip can't be scanned from a distance. I'm also suspicious of the new NC drivers licenses - the DMV claims they don't have RFID chips but I'd wrap it in foil anyway before putting it in my wallet.
