Is this possible? What would I need to power the mic? Not sure how to go about setting it up.

you need something with a mic in

your Audigy might have one, but you would be better off with some kind of audio interface with a mic pre build in.

^^well, the reason you need a preamp is to provide (+48v phantom) power to the mic. I know for a fact that your Audigy2 isn't going to do it, especially if you convert it from XLR to 1/4". A guitar amp most likely wont provide the right voltage and would probably fuck your mic up.

You can get a reliable pre-amp for less than $50. I bought one a couple of weeks ago from zzounds.com for work.

an SM57 is a dynamic mic, it doesn't need phantom power, it does need mic preamping to sound right

plugging it into a guitar amp is risky, you could damage your amp, and it certainly won't work right

^^yeah, generally only condensor mics need phantom power, dynamic mics work just like headphones just backwords. You can actually use a set of headphones as a mic and a microphone as a headphone speaker, they just don't work that well

unless it has a mic in, probably not going to work right
your best bet if you don't want to buy anything big is to use the mic in on your audigy, just buy a female XLR to male 1/4 then buy a male 1/4 to male 1/8

^ i have a 1/4 inch mic-in on my audigy. So that's kind of why i thought it might not be that hard to just get a converter. We're not talking about studio-grade here, I just want something i can get drunk and lay some vocals down with, and maybe sound clear on vent/ts since my headset broke.

If you think i should get a preamp i dunno, maybe it's an option.

I have a Digitech RPx400 FX process which is a 4x recording interface and a Mic preamp. if youre interested.

I also have an Audiophile 2496 that for $80 will blow the audigy away in recording quality.

You can find a converter, I don't know if ratshack has XLR to 1/4, but your local music store should, but ratshack should have the 1/4 to 1/8
