Previous school: n/a (Lowe was an assistant with the Detroit Pistons last year) Replaced: Herb Sendek NC State's record last season: 22-10 Current record: 6-2
A lot of folks (myself included) questioned Lowe's hiring last spring, but so far he's had all the right answers. The Wolfpack lost their lone senior, point guard Engin Atsur, to injury in the beginning of their game against Michigan on Nov. 27, yet they won that one before dropping their next two on the road. Considering this team lost three senior starters as well as agile center Andrew Brackman, who decided to focus on baseball, it's pretty impressive they're as competitive as they are. (They came very close to wining their ACC opener at Virginia last week.) Unfortunately, Lowe also lost some recruits last spring who had committed to Sendek so he has some ground to make up there, but at least he's off to a promising start." |
Not bad. Number 3 in the top 10. Interesting to see Doherty up there. I think he'll end up being a really good coach in the future. Good to see those last two losses not deter Seth Davis from keeping Lowe out of this list...considering our depth issues.12/12/2006 12:26:09 PM |

yeah all things considered hes doing a pretty awesome job with the amount of talent he has available
we lost bethel, bennerman, evtimov (not really much of a loss there), brackman (to baseball), and of course he forgot to mention simmons (to the NBA)....and now for the past 4 games Atsur our only returning starter has been injured
i'm glad some of the other guys have stepped it up so far this season even though herb never gave alot of them too many chances to play last season
McCauley and Costner have really stepped it up for us in particular

in terms of recruiting he's not doing bad either.
i like his strategy - everyone knows good guards are important, especially in the ACC, but being in the NBA Sid understands the importance of solid forwards. 12/12/2006 1:03:12 PM |

How is Sidney even eligible to be ranked? According to the beginning of the article, Seth Green took out of consideration any coaches that "replaced a head coach who left voluntarily." I'm pretty sure Herb falls under that category...nonetheless, good job Sid! 12/12/2006 4:32:38 PM |

I don't.
He didn't really accomplish anything at Notre Dame with some pretty talented teams and then he ran the UNC program into the fucking ground and would have squandered a National Championship roster if he had not been forced out.
Then the idiot walked away from millions of dollars in his severance package because he "wasnt thinking clearly" and "did not realize what he was doing".
I dont want a guy who crumbles under pressure the way Matt Doherty did and I'd like to think other AD's are smart enough not to either.
Maybe he recovers from his nervous breakdown and learns from his mistakes, but I think he's far better off at a small school where maybe his personality won't cause as many problems as it did at UNC.

I agree he has started off well, but I see that more in a recruiting sense. He's done a fantastic job within a shorter than optimal timeframe. It's hard to say how good of a COACH he is. I think he will end up being very, very good but at this point you can't say one way or another.
We haven't lost any games we shouldn't have, though I felt we should have beat WVU since they were picked 13th or 14th in the Big East and the 4 games I've seen them play before this were underwhelming. I understand though that Beilien is one hell of a coach** and that is acceptable. We beat Michigan in large part thanks to an adjustment that Lowe made so great job there. I expected the loss to UVa so no big deal there.
I think this season is a success to me if we win 5 ACC games and get to .500 overall. Certainly possible...
** anyone who disagrees and will compare him to Herb's offense doesn't understand basketball and the importance of adjustments. See WVU-Wake Forest game in '05 NCAA tourney.. just added that b/c I know it's coming..

I hate losing.. But the way this team has played I can't be mad at the 2 loses. In fact it gives me a lot of hope that once we get a few extra players we can win those close games. I too think we can finish .500 and sneak our way into the NIT which would be a very successful year considering what this team has gone through. 12/14/2006 10:13:07 AM |

Quote : | "TEAM OF THE WEEK: NORTH CAROLINA STATE By Andy Katz
Can't say I saw this coming. That would be a lie. But what I did see way back in November, when NC State came back to beat Michigan in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, was a team that had plenty of heart, desire and passion, and believed in everything its first-year coach said.
The Wolfpack maybe didn't get enough credit earlier in the week for a surprising win at Virginia Tech. Maybe that was because the win came on the same night Indiana beat Wisconsin, while Texas' Kevin Durant lit up Texas Tech for 37 points and 23 rebounds. But clearly the victory in Blacksburg set up Saturday's raucous win over rival North Carolina.
The atmosphere at the RBC Center seemed Stanley Cup-like, at least through the TV screen. The Wolfpack continued to attack the Tar Heels and never seemed to be fazed as UNC responded.
What has made this season so hard to predict is the way the Tar Heels smoked Arizona one Saturday in Tucson only to get pushed around, and look a bit displaced, seven days later in Raleigh against a collection of gritty players.
Every game will still be a struggle for the Wolfpack, but be certain about this: NC State won't be an easy out under Sidney Lowe. This week, the Wolfpack became the headline team in The Triangle -- and with UNC and Duke as competitors, that's something to savor. " |

that's more accurate. talented players don't do you much good when one of them is semi-injured and the others are out of breath from playing so many minutes. 2/5/2007 4:17:47 PM |
