I know right, i HATE how when I watch sportscenter they show about 15-20 minutes of NBA shit and go into analysis and talk to like 5 people, when neither myself nor a good percentage of the population gives a damn about the NBA, just a leauge where a bunch of motherfucking hoodlums and thugs get paid millions of dollars to play basketball and show their ass. This is clearly displayed by the two incidents in the past couple of years, and those are just ON COURT.
then they show like MAYBE a minute of hockey and thats it.
I HATE sportscenter, they always give so much damn time to the NBA and MLB, its ridiculous 12/22/2006 12:25:18 AM |

Sportscenter has the unenviable job of trying to please everyone's sports tastes. I think, for the most part, they do a decent job. You may not like the NBA highlights, but many people, myself included, do. I for one couldn't care less about college basketball, but when the highlights come on, I can change the channel, read a magazine, wash a dish, etc... I certainly wouldn't expect Sportscenter to stop showing them simply because I wasn't interested.
Perhaps someday we will have SportsCenter on demand. That would be awesome. I should invent that. 12/22/2006 2:09:57 AM |

There's a lack of NHL coverage on SportsCenter because you won't find an NHL game on an ESPN channel.
Why would you go out of your way to highlight a mediocre popularity sport that you get nothing out of? 12/22/2006 7:29:59 AM |

^^^ which is why the NHL should have taken less money for it to stay on ESPN than take more money to put it on a channel that hardly anyone has.
That said, hockey isn't half as good on TV compared to being at the game. No sport is amplified live to the degree that hockey is. 12/22/2006 4:23:43 PM |

I tend to disagree, I dunno, maybe we hang around completely different people, but no one I know gives half a shit about the NBA. Its a bunch of overpaid wanna-be thugs running their mouth all the time thinking they are gods gift to the sports world, not only that but the passion and excitement is not there like it is in college basketball.
and my example of the on court fights in the past year was just that, ON COURT examples, you could probably make a huge list of shit that happens off court involving NBA players. Its a troubled league, and honestly just not that damn exciting.

NHL players also make... you guessed it... millions. Both NHL attendance and television ratings are not too far behind the NBA. I don't think anyone would argue with the fact that the NBA is the more popular league in the US right now, but people who don't think anyone gives a shit about hockey are naive.
ESPN doesn't show NHL highlights for the exact reason that someone said earlier. They get nothing out of promoting the game. They recently blocked NHL advertisements that were supposed to air on their channels. Comcast is trying to launch a new sports network in Versus to eventually compete with ESPN. Right now the NHL is the biggest thing they have to offer, so ESPN certainly isn't going to try and attract people to the game. 12/24/2006 8:42:59 PM |

hockey everyone has to work together and the teams, for the most part like each other, whereas in the NBA certain guys will try to be the 'star' and do it themselves.

dude the NBA DWARVES the NHL in terms of fan interest and financial success.
The NBA isnt that popular here because this is college basketball territory. The NBA is very popular in other areas.
One fucking incident (artest) and people think the league is a bunch of thugs. Thats ridiculous. They threw a fucking beer cup at him. I would go after the guy too...
You think hockey players never go into the stands??? You think baseball players never go into the stands??
Cause you're wrong. Its happened recently.
The fight the other day was not a big incident. Fights are actually at an all-time LOW in the NBA. Look at the 70s when fights were rampant. Look at the 80s when hard fouls were part of the game.
You guys are just racists and its very obvious. Hockey players are much more thuggish, take more cheap shots, and have a lack of respect for opposing players.
Name the last time a basketball player MAIMED an opponent the way McSorley did a few years ago. 12/24/2006 9:08:14 PM |

yeah the NFL is #1 followed by the NBA.
Hockey overexpanded into too many markets. Its jsut not a mainstream sport.
Hockey thrives off of very loyal fan support. Most hockey fans are not just casual fans. They go to games frequently and they buy merchandise.
However, hockey gets very poor ratings on TV. They dont have anywhere near the type of corporate sponsorship that the NBA gets because its such a regional sport.
Now that they have their salary cap in place hopefully hockey can become a profitable sport again and not plunge itself into the financial mess it had itself in the last decade.
Unfortunately they completely burned ESPN and now have lost the #1 sports network which was very important for their growth potential.
The NBA has latched on to ESPN and given the amazing level of talent in the league right now its not going anywhere anytime soon. 12/24/2006 9:16:03 PM |
Vulcan91 All American 13893 Posts user info edit post |
^ Dead on.
The NHL has actually had better attendance percentages so far this season than the NBA (91.94% compared to 88.04%), but when it comes to television ratings the NBA on ABC gets similar ratings for regular season games that the NHL on NBC got for the Stanley Cup Finals. The league doesn't have near the exposure or recognition of the NBA, and I don't know that it ever will. The potential in the United States for the league is certainly there, though, as the NHL was supposedly in a position to surpass the NBA in popularity back in 94 (around the time when the Rangers won the Cup), but that was all squandered away by poor marketing and a poor product on the ice for the rest of the 90's and up until the lockout of two years ago. 12/24/2006 9:23:40 PM |
