speaking of TWC .... did you know you can switch between earthlink and roadrunner to get their good deals for "new customers" ? and if you order it thru bestbuy u can usually get a rebate.
I switched from rr to earthlink, so my internet is now down to $30/mo, and I *should* be getting a $100 best buy gift card.... we shall see 12/21/2006 1:01:50 PM |

Quote : | "Raleigh — As many as 250,000 Time Warner Cable customers in the Triangle area lost their service Thursday morning after a construction accident, officials said.
Time Warner spokesman Tom Lawrence said a fiber-optic cable between Raleigh and Durham was cut. Crews have located the problem, and are trying to repair it.
Service in Durham, Chapel Hill and Moore County isn't affected by the outage, Lawrence said." |

its a good bet that everywhere is affected as the people who got cut seem to be spill over routed through everyone else's shit, explaining the insane latency and lack of bandwidth. this is all my personal speculation though. 12/21/2006 1:46:11 PM |

Same problem here in Clayton too.
I'm at a 6s latency time for most hops though...
Actually, as soon as I made this post, it's started working normally

i would have figured that they would have several lines and could switch over if one went down 12/21/2006 8:23:28 PM |
LoneSnark All American 12317 Posts user info edit post |
I suspect they do have other lines, hence why most people had a connection, merely a slow one. Whatever other lines there were are incapable of handling the throughput of all customers. Evidently their response to this is simply to buffer the data, in effect making everyone stand in line for their turn through the remaining pipe(s). Hence why latency changed throughout the day (the first post shows a latency of 3 seconds, at a later time another poster reported 10 seconds).
This is all conjecture on my part as I do not work for time warner. 12/22/2006 2:15:11 AM |

laying down cable is an extremely expensive proposition - why the hell would you lay down redundant cables in geographically isolated locations just in case one got cut? then you'd have way more capacity than you needed and you'd have to amortize that cost across all your customers. stupid idea

true but most of Raleigh, Clayton, Cary were affected. I wouldn't call the capitol of North Carolina... "geographically isolated" 12/22/2006 7:38:27 AM |
8=======D Suspended 588 Posts user info edit post |
i was obviously referring to the cables when I said geographically isolated, and obviously meant that they would have to be placed at far distances geographically from each other in order to make the redundancy worthwhile.

haha speaking of which
i don't know how many it affected today, but a large truck clipped some low lines in a church parking lot off of new hope earlier this afternoon. must have been around 2pm. of course when i got home, no cable or internet. i drove back by there around 7pm and they had like 10+ cable vans and such working on it.

I assure you they run more than one single cable. Its multiple in one bundle. If one gets cut they most likely all do.
Have you ever looked up how they make fiber optic cables, its interesting stuff.
