An enclosure and internal hd is often cheaper than an external hd.

You can get an external hd enclosure for $40 and throw any old hard drive in.

I got one for christmas and it took me maybe 20 minutes to set up the entire thing

not only are enclosures cheaper, but external hds are more prone to breaking
