Got some HBO dvds for my sister for X-mas (Sex and the City), but the damned things won't work in her MacBook. I feel pretty confident that this has something to do with flippin' HBO, because her MacBook plays any other DVD just fine.
Anyone know a way to make these work? 12/25/2006 11:21:41 PM |

You have to download the HBO Plugin for the mac.
Just upgrade your quicktime to the newest version and that should include all the plugins you need. 12/25/2006 11:31:53 PM |

Still....nothing. She's got the latest quicktime update but no play of the DVD.
Also, to clarify, it just spits the DVD back out. It doesn't say anything like "Please download the plugin."
More ideas?

He's making fun of you, man.
What you actually need is the Sarah Jessica Parker Enabler kernel extension. 12/25/2006 11:59:55 PM |

Have you tried it with Band of Brothers or Entourage? Maybe your (no homo) flag has been inadvertently tripped.
Also I'd try it with a Showtime DVD. We really need to narrow down what the issue is here. Maybe you can't watch anything more than basic cable TV. Does your sister even pay for HBO? I'd have her call Time Warner if I were you and see if they can add the HBO DVD feature to her services. 12/26/2006 12:19:08 AM |

Is the region set on the DVD player? And does she have a SuperDrive in it (the kind that can write DVDs)?
HBO copy protection doesn't play well with region-free players or DVD writers in PCs. It doesn't happen all the time, but that *might* be part of your problem. idk ::shrug:: 12/26/2006 9:18:59 AM |

It actually ejects them before anything else happens. No error message. No decoder problems. Just simply, "nope, here you go and have this back." Which, understandably, is exactly what I would do if someone gave me Sex and the City DVD's. But, come on. This is just a DVD. It should effin' playback. 12/26/2006 4:17:02 PM |

Make sure the disc is nice and clean.
And see if the disc plays in something else to make sure it's not the disc itself. 12/26/2006 7:59:02 PM |

this thread has nothing to do with the toothpaste thread..... someone asking for legitimate help on a DVD/computer problem vs. someone asking for technical support on toothpaste? not even in the same ball park..... 12/27/2006 12:38:27 PM |

after re-reading the whole thread, I'll clarify my response:
this thread has nothing to do with the toothpaste thread..... someone asking for legitimate help on a DVD/computer problem and one person (spookyjon) giving smart ass, moderately-funny-at-first-but-now-not-so-much-because-no-one-else-is-playing-the-game responses vs. someone asking for technical support on toothpaste? not even in the same ball park..... 12/27/2006 2:07:28 PM |

Hey! I was being a smart ass too. Don't forget about me!
And I still think the original question was ridiculous enough ("I feel pretty confident that this has something to do with flippin' HBO") to warrant jon and my replies.
We can't help it if nobody else played along. 12/27/2006 2:46:33 PM |

Well, why wouldn't it have something to do with HBO and some sort of copy protection?
The DVD's work fine in any other player, except when we put them in a computer.
I'll be damned if that's a ridiculous question. Go fist yourself, Homo. 12/28/2006 9:48:06 AM |
