http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/11/18/mp3_player_atm_hack/
Quote : | "A man in Manchester, England has been convicted of using an MP3 player to hack cash machines. Maxwell Parsons, 41, spent £200,000 of other people's money after using the machine to read card details.
Parsons plugged his MP3 player into the back of free standing cash machines and was able to use it to read data about customers' cards. That data could then be used to 'clone' cards and use them for bogus purchases.
Free-standing machines are typically found in shops and bars, and they allowed Parsons to plug his machine into the back of them in a way that would be impossible in wall mounted dispensers.
The MP3 player recorded customer details as they were transmitted over phone lines to the bank. Tones were read as they were transmitted and used to clone cards.
The case was heard at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester. Parsons was sentenced to 32 months in prison for the scam. Though £200,000 was spent on the cards, police said they believed that Parsons himself only earned £14,000 through it.
Police uncovered the scam almost by accident when they stopped Parsons for making an illegal u-turn in a car in London. They found a fake bank card in his possession and searched his home in Manchester, where they found the evidence with which to prosecute.
He denied the charges of fraud at first but eventually admitted to possessing equipment to make a false instrument, deception and unlawful interception of a public telecommunication transmission. He is believed to have had accomplices." |

^ here is a message i sent to OmarBadu after he locked my topic in the lounge:
Quote : | "did you even bother to see when the article came out?" |
Yeah, it came out 6 years months ago
What does it matter WHEN a news article came out? What matters is it's appeal, and if it has been posted before or not.
I SEARCHED AND I DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING.
So, why was it locked?
****************************************************
And this, this is just a MONTH old. Is that such a long time?
Again, I searched but didn't find it.
So STFU you ass.12/28/2006 1:33:59 PM |

look, your last three threads all cover news that is over a month old. we all read engadget or nytimes or any of the 1000 different sources that covered these news events. if nobody cared enough to make a thread about it in november when it happened (aka little to no appeal), why would it be important enough to make a thread about now?

yeah, i know this is the internet. thanks.
but, i can't know what people have seen or not seen.
are you saying that EACH AND EVERY news article that comes out in the world is read by TWW'ers as a whole? because you know, that's just ridiculous.
and one of my threads covers news that is < a month old, and it is news from the terrorist (arab) world. i am sure no one saw that.

to answer your question, yes, as a whole someone has likely read and posted a piece of news if it is both interesting and that old. 12/28/2006 3:56:12 PM |

[new] to me. So no, not everyone in tech talk reads 'tech magazines' and the likes all day long. I found the article to be pretty interesting. 12/28/2006 5:09:13 PM |
