Because of my job with the Navy here in the Middle East, we get to go to Dubai a lot.. The place is completely unreal.. Downtown Dubai has what looks to be several hundred skyscrapers all going up at the same time.. Imagine trying to build all of New York at once.

The standard of living here is so much better than the US (although, the flip side of that is that poverty is disgustingly inhumane in their ghetto-equivalents). I'm about to move into my first apartment (paid for by Uncle Sam) that's the size of my parent's house back in NC, fully furnished with high-speed internet, marble floors, and, since the Navy is forcing me to spend every dime of my off-base housing benefits, they're throwing in a lease on a car for a year with insurance. That's the norm for the city of Manama, Bahrain.

well, dubai is an emirate of The UAE, its not its own country.

the UAE is actually very rich in oil, but Dubai is different from the other emirates in that only a small part of its GDP is from oil.

330 m (1,083 ft) tall. Twists by 90 degrees. Each floor twists by 1.2 degrees compared to the previous one. Apparently there is only one other tower in the world to do that, The Turning Torso, in Sweden, which is 190 m (623 feet) high:

they are building the worlds largest theme park, mall and aquarium. they already have indoor skiing, sand skiing and typical ocean rec. theres plenty to DO and the regular hotels that don't break records are actually pretty cheap.

they have the worst poverty in the middle east? and you know this how? are you saying yemenis are on average more well-off than emiratis?

as for workers, they are lowest paid? and you know this how? maybe they are, maybe they aren't. but construction workers (laborers) in the middle east in general are paid peanuts (they are foreign), just as foreign labor in most any other country (mexicans in US?). typically about $200/month. yes, it IS awful.

I read somewhere that 20% of the world's construction cranes are in Dubai right now. That must be an insane sight to walk around and see that many buildings going up at one time.

of the top 200 tallest buildings in the world, 8 are in Dubai.

but there are 17 buildings under construction all slated to be taller than 300 meters. and they will all be finished in a year or two.

and these 17 will all be in the top 50 tallest by the time they are finished!!!

count the cranes in just this one pic with like 3-4 buildings in view! (that's the world's tallest building under construction in the middle)

dude what? lol. First, there is plenty to do in Dubai. 2nd, its not hot all year round. In winter its quite cool. I would know since i've lived in Abu Dhabi for 11 years. Even before all this hype there was tons to do there. Poverty you say? The only poverty I saw were the Indians and Pakistanis that did all the manual labor. How is that any different then the US? except that they aren't illegal and they are governed pretty harshly. If they slip up they're sent right back where they came from because its a privilege and an opportunity for them to have a better life in the Emirates then it is in their own countries.

And of course you have the nomads but I wouldn't really count them as poverty. They've been living like that for centuries and its their way of life. They have no use for money or other 'modern' amenities.
