" "Well, I can understand the theory of wanting to free people," Ford said, referring to Bush's assertion that the United States has a "duty to free people." But the former president said he was skeptical "whether you can detach that from the obligation No. 1, of what's in our national interest." He added: "And I just don't think we should go hellfire damnation around the globe freeing people, unless it is directly related to our own national security.""

"In August 1999, President Ford received the Medal of Freedom. This honor, the nation's highest civilian award, was presented by President Bill Clinton in recognition of President Ford's role in guiding the nation through the turbulent times of Watergate, the resignation of President Nixon and the end of the Vietnam War."

Quote :
"In 2001, the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation validated [his service] with a 'Profiles in Courage Award' [for] Ford's most controversial and self-damaging political act, the pardon of Richard Nixon. By then, most Americans already recognized Ford's ultimate contribution: Called on to serve at the highest level, Gerald Ford bestowed on the American people the precious gifts of personal decency, political normalcy, and, as his 1979 autobiography suggests, A Time to Heal."

^^no, I was asking a rhetorical question on the matter. Gerald Ford was against the war in Iraq and it seems like everyone else who is against the war has been labelled as anti-american and against the troops by the republican party.

^^^ President Ford restored dignity to the presidency: He did not seek the office, he was a decent man with an impeccable record who was well thought of on both sides of the aisle, and he maintained a virtually open-door policy at the White House. In addition, Ford's pardon of Nixon is not the small thing that you seem to be making it out to be. The pardon spared our country the spectacle of an ex-president trying to stay out of jail, and it calmed the rest of the world that was watching us--friends and enemies. And do not forget the Supreme Court has held that when one accepts a presidential pardon, it is an admission of guilt.

President Ford's list of accomplishments--before, during, and after his term in office--goes on. Most Republicans and Democrats now agree that he did much for our country.

Ford's decision to airlift 130,000 Vietnamese refugees to safety, particularly Amerasian bastards who would have been condemned to a life of ridicule and abuse, was probably his best deed while in office.

It was pretty unpopular at the time. There was quite a bit of racism from the war. Democrats like Byrd, Biden and McGovern condemned the decision as contrary to American interests. Ask those 130,000 refugees and their offspring in America today whether they think it was a bad decision.

Well it's obvious that someone must hate him and his family. They refuse to bury the poor guy. Give his widow some rest for crying out loud.
