simple solutions:

when you are on campus, walk through and decide for yourself

are you that busy with your time that you cant do this, or just too lazy?

what are you looking to get out of a gym

how close is each

which gym

how much

you are an idiot for not going to the gym on campus first to check it out before paying for a gym membership

I joined an outside gym just because I got sick of dealing with parking & overcrowding.

what?!?! I don't know if its nasty or overcrowded or if there are an abundence of sexy men running around, in which I wouldn't feel that comfortable. I like my gym with the a private cardio areas and a dark rooms and the tvs on the equipment.

i think the gym is pretty good, its old but its big and depending on what time you go its not that crowded, and for parking just park in the health center lot, its really not that far of a walk

Pros:
- Almost everything is free. Paid for by student fees.
- The facility is huge ... you probably won't find many places that offers as much.
- Easy to pick up one activity if you get bored with another.

Cons:
- Parking sucks unless you have a permit on-campus.
- Hours for the some of the facilities can get weird.
- Equipment isn't guaranteed to be new.

If you have that kind of money, and either no time or no brains (or a combination), you shouldn't be asking this.

or park in the C lot over by reynolds or in the deck

sure you might not always be able to park 20 feet from the door . . . but last i checked you go to the gym to exercise . . . so what is a little walk

Sometimes I forget how big of tools some people on TWW can be... Jen, imho, I'd rather pay 15/mo to go to Planet Fitness because:

-parking is free anytime,
-perimeter traffic is usually much better
-better entertainment while you're on the cardio machines (lots of tv's, plug your earphones into music, etc),
-better selection of cardio equipment,
-tanning beds,
-and it's not a sketchy place where I ever feel like I'm going to be hit on or I feel awkward working out at...

I only go to the gym on campus for some of the things you don't get a discount gym like PF (classes, etc.) and to watch my friends or play in IMREC sports

i agree with ^...this is the 8th semester i've been at state...the gyms always freaking over crowded, u cant park there til after 5, by then traffic sucks, etc etc- prolly worth the 15/month to go to a better environment

Planet Fitness is a good gym for the money, and they are almost always open. Carmichael has a tendency to run weird hours and shut down when the school is closed, or at least it did when I attended NCSU.

wtf?

i have seen very few incidents of girls being "hit" on at the ncsu gym and its usual a casual hey whats up type of thing. get over yourself, nobody is looking at you drooling...

ncsu gym is nice b/c you already pay for it. parking is not an issue unless you are too lazy to walk - which should not be an argument for a gym, sorry

the only complaints i can find w/ the ncsu gym is that the hours around holidays are not the best

having gone to several other gyms in the area, i actually like ncsu gym's equipment, they seem to have a good selection, and they have duplicates of the most popular pieces of equipment.

Yeah it's really not sketch at all, I mean on the track and in the cardio room there are mostly chicks anyways, and I don't see how you'd feel awkward any more than you would at any other gym at Carmichael, I mean gyms aren't typically known for their privacy.....

Don't read between the lines and make up that I was saying that about Carmichael... because I wasn't. All I was giving was my opinion on PF if she was interested.

pmcassel... you're an idiot for writing "get over yourself, nobody is looking at you drooling..." I'm not vain at all, I was simply giving her a reference for something MOST women consider when picking a gym. Thanks for pointing out what I was saying about how people on TWW can be tools...

people go to the gym because they are vain and want to improve themselves

nobody (for the most part) cares what anyone else is doing, so stop worrying that people will be watching your every move

I really wish we could get a nice facility built on Centennial Campus with plenty of parking. Our gym sucks ass compared to other large public universities I've been to. Some schools also have multiple workout options on campus as well so you don't necessarily have to walk 2 miles if you're on the wrong side of campus.

Our equipment is old, the rooms are small, and the layout is poor.

who cares if the equipment is old?

you don't need any whiz-bang high-speed gadgetry or shiny stuff to get into shape. carmichael is great for the price, and decent in general. the're open early and late, too.

the problems are not being able to park there until 5pm, and the fact that they run weird hours or close altogether sometimes when you want to hit the gym.

my solution when i was at NCSU was to buy like 10-20 passes (at a much discounted rate) over at Big Ape gym, to be used when I couldn't go to Carmichael.

it's exercise, just very light exercise

only thing i found 'bad' about our gym is there there isn't enough cardio equipment for the ladies.... and the weight rooms aren't all that big or close together.... IMHO they should expand the lower 2 stories of the newer part to the the road just about, extend the track around and bank it better move the weight rooms from the first rooms at the old entrance over to the new area next to the racketball courts and expand the selection some. then add a ton of cardio equipment to the new area on the upper floor inside the track..... presto, and all that would be lost is a hill, that isn't functional, rather than a parking lot and outdoor basketball courts..... but OH WELL....

our pool is better than duke's
we have more bball courts than duke
rock wall
way more racket ball courts than duke
and i think we have more space for classes, martial arts, fencing etc..... or rather we would with the additonal space opened up....

we need another gym at some point built on centennial, would just have a smaller pool (maaaaybe olympic at biggest, probably not though) more cardio stuff, weight room about as big as current one, indoor basketball/tennis court(s) a few with a small track on a balcony around it's perimeter... and 3 rooms for things, one padded carpeting, other 2 hardwood with roll out mats if needed...

pipe dreams i know

Typical female bullshit.

Listening to music / watching TV while doing cardio is a complete waste of a workout. Treadmills are terrible for you, elliptical machines are good to mix in but shouldn't replace all impact cardio, stationary bikes are eh at best and the rowing machines are good.

I find it very funny that girls are always the ones complaining about being "hit on" or feeling "awkward" at the gym. If LOTS of guys are looking at you doing cardio it's very likely for one of three reasons:

1) We can tell you spent an hour "getting ready" to go to the gym, wearing all kinds of retarded makeup, accessories, music shit, et al.

2) You are doing something so horrifically wrong, it's like watching a car wreck. This usually is the case of every girl who has ever used a stairmaster, elliptical or stationary bike. Also includes the girls who run like you are trying to beat the ground into submission.

3) You are one of the two girls per year who actually come to the gym ALL the time, does your workout correctly, don't give a shit about what you are wearing and show us that at least someone gets the picture. These rare gems do get looks, but no one bothers them because they are there to get their shit done.

Let me clarify... the whole thing about me feeling "uncomfortable" is not because I think that the guys at the guys there are going to gawk at me and then chase me down in the parking lot.

Im uncordinated, I semi hold my boobs when I run, I don't know how alot of the equipment works. I get all self-consious around really good looking men especailly if i know im huffing and puffing my ass off. I generally feel pretty stupid!

And i have never been to this gym cuz I don't know where it is, where the stuff is, when i should go, where to park. I know Im only gona learn by going and checking it out but Id like to drag a friend before I go by myself.
