Late December, I took a trip to visit my mom's side of the family in a rural town about 30 minutes East of Cleveland. My little brother and I were exploring the woods across the road from my aunt's house when we came across these stone ruins in a creek bottom in a relatively sparse hardwood forest. Possibilities that came to mind were a bridge section or part of an old mill, but I couldn't quite relate what I saw to any bridge or mill I've come across.

Facing South, downstream is to the right:

Still walking away at the same angle, looking back. This is when it became apparent that the ruins were at the end of a long corridor through the woods. Given the way the soil was cut away, I assumed it was an old roadbed. The roadbed did not continue past the ruins. Note the creek running towards the ruin on the left side of the photo:


Even further away, looking back, at the opposite terminus of the corridor. The ruins were not visible from this point:

Just an old bridge, possibly for a logging trail, got one of those up where I live, go further up or down the trail and if you come upon a giant stack or two of old wood it was most likely for a sawmill.

Judging from how wide it is I'd have to agree it was a logging operation so vehicles could pass on both sides.

The growth says it was about 50-100 years ago. Toss an email out to the local gov. They'll have records.

Looks to me as though there was a trail cut through there. This could have been just a little
thing built to keep the trail from washing over.
There were things like this where I grew up in Sleepy Hollow NY (where the legend comes from)
where there were miles and miles of OLD trails.

Looks like an old road. There is a historical society in NC that keeps track of them and goes to look at them from time to time.

Dr. Caddell in the History department is a member I think. He had talked about it once or twice.
