we've been assigned this thing. we have to attend an event alone that we'd normally not attend. the event is supposed to expose us to a difference culture. we haveto be out of our familiar cultural and preferably ethnic element. we have to communicate with someone there.

there is a mosque on hillsborough street

there is also a native american festival at NCSU every spring

Find a jew and to one of those mitzvah party things...

except for the jewish thing, i had to do those other things for a cultural class i took in my undergrad. very painless. i recommend the mosque- it's behind that burger king. They have to pray 5 times a day so a lot of them come in there to pray- really interesting to witness such a different practice.

They're also really really nice Muslims.

i once dated a latin girl in high school where i went with her to a spanish speaking catholic service. pretty different from an ethnic standpoint for a white guy who grew up in an all-white southern baptist church.

I went to New Orleans over Spring Break w/ Campus Crusade, who I never had any contact with before. I also didn't know anyone going prior to signing up. Just pick something and go with it. As long as you can write about your experience and explain how it affected you, you should be good.

there's this japan club thing that gets together once a month or so and you basically just eat good food. i went once but it was a little awkward. i just stood around and talked to the white kids in my class.

in 2001 i took a world religion class and had to attend a religious service different from my own...i went to a buddhist temple in raleigh called the kadampa center. it wasn't so bad, i just kind of sat back and observed and no one paid me much attention.

Dweedle, I know some people who did Asia night(if they are having that this year) or the carnivals like have been mentioned. I personally used my trip over spring break to the Dominican as mine. There were also a few who took the route you are trying to avoid. Just find something that sounds fun. Lots of on campus activities.

I did something like this for a class once as well, and I went to a prayer service at the mosque out by ES King. Call ahead, and they're happy to provide someone who will talk to you before the service and discuss it with you afterwards to answer any questions.
