At UNC Chapel Hill... I am posting in Old School because there are no new graduates that have the required experience. I work in networking, not security, but this is a very talented and good group to work for. UNC has a very very very good IT department.

Brief Description:
The security manager works collaboratively to design, develop, and implement an information security program consistent with the University's mission and in accord with University Policy and Federal and State laws and regulations. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining security procedures, methods, architecture and standards necessary to ensure the safety of information systems and to protect the system from intentional (unauthorized) or accidental (inadvertent) access or destruction. Duties include evaluating new technology to develop appropriate security plans and evaluating specific security exposures and threats to determine risk. Responsibilities include implementing security measures such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, intrusion prevention systems and other security software or devices. This position responds to a wide range of IT security incidents; including intrusion, appropriate use violations, and copyright infringement. Duties include providing security training for other IT professionals. The position involves carrying a pager and responding when on call. This position involves a high level of integrity, excellent judgment and knowledge concerning issues of privacy and confidentiality, excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to work as an independent, productive, responsible, self-motivated member of a team in high pressure situations.

The unusual Requirements: You'll either need your SANS GSEC and CISSP or be ready to have it within 6 months of being hired or have knowledge equiv to a masters in information security.

Title: Assoc Director of Security
Pay: The hiring range for this level is $87,820-$105,000.

If you want to apply, go to hr.unc.edu, and search for job postings in department (Information Techology Services). There is one other position posted... Application speciliast in about the same pay grade. if you are in IT, this is a place to continually visit. We post a lot of jobs throughout there year...

Fair warning guys, you WILL be dealing with a lot of bureaucracy in a uniersity position. That being said, I've seen some of the stuff the IT Security folks do at a university level, and its fairly interesting. Still get to do the technical stuff, and get to have a lot of influence into the non-technical stuff (e.g. policies).

I am working on my CCNA and an Associates in Networking Technology. But I'm only partway though that, and I've only been working fulltime for a school system for a couple months, so I probably gotta wait another year or two to be qualified for anything in Raleigh.
