There has been discussion of his running for this office in other threads as a side note, but I think this alumni of our school and state deserves a thread of his own.

I liked this speech...the parts about being for leadership in terms of assistance to the poverty stricken, for dealing with Darfur against escalation, taking responsibility for his vote for the war calling it wrong, and saying its time for america to be patriotic about something other than war.

Here is just a 3 min clip of him with John Stewart:

Quote :
"John Edwards, former Senator John Edwards, born June 10, 1953 in South Carolina, former U.S. Senator from North Carolina and 2004 Democratic vice-presidential nominee. As a Presidential candidate, Edwards was famed for his populist message in his "Two Americas" Speech and also for his optimistic, positive attitude. This was evidenced by his refusal to attack his opponents. In the primaries, Sen. Edwards had strong come-from-behind showings in the crucial states of Iowa, Oklahoma, Virginia, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Georgia. He also won the North Carolina caucus and the South Carolina primary. Edwards has kept his Federal Leadership PAC, the One America Committee [3], active to help Democrats across the nation win elections in the future. On February 5, 2005, Edwards spoke at the New Hampshire Democratic Party's fundraising dinner. On August 18, 2005, Edwards traveled to Waterloo, Iowa to deliver an address to the Iowa AFL-CIO, a potential key supporter in the Iowa caucus. On December 16, 2006, Democratic officials reported that Edwards has expressed his intention to run in 2008. [2] On December 26, 2006, Edwards announced his candidacy after a technical glitch launched his campaign website a day early.
U.S. Senator from North Carolina: 1999 - 2005 "

"Edwards's campaign has stated that its main focus is on eliminating poverty, fighting global warming, and providing universal health care."

"On January 14, 2007 Edwards spoke at New York City's Riverside Church where Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his April 4, 1967 anti-war Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence speech. In the speech Edwards made an implicit criticism against Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, and criticized silence on the "escalation of the war in Iraq." In the speech he also spoke on AIDS in Africa, energy independence and the impending increase in the minimum wage."

I personally like that he his pro civil unions, an idea that has grown on his last run for national office, and that compared to bush & kerry he comes from working class.

I think his name on top of the banner with maybe Obama on the 2nd line looks a lot nicer than bush & dick.

Edwards is an idiot. If he were elected president (which he won't be), he would be like the democrat version of Bush, I think.

He's the only one who can get our state and school in the spot light at all by making us a possible swing state, and he's the only one of the candidates playing anywhere close to the same level as Obama & Hillary.

Quote :
"The most recent national polls show Edwards placing third among the Democratic field, behind Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama.[32] On December 21, 2006, a poll of 600 likely Iowa caucus voters was released by KCCI-TV. It found that Edwards and Senator Barack Obama were tied with 22%, followed by Governor Tom Vilsack with 14%, and then Senator Hillary Clinton with 10%.[33][34] On January 17, 2007, Zogby released a poll of 596 likely caucus goers in New Hampshire showing Edwards with a 10 point lead over Clinton, Obama, and Vilsack."

Under no circumstances should Obama hitch his wagon to a jackass like Edwards. Edwards and Clinton should get together and create a stinking tarball.

You can't hook together a strongly anti iraq war guy like edwards and a strongly pro iraq war gal like hillary.

Senator Barack Obama of Illinois (Exploratory Committee)
Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico (Moving America Forward PAC)[5][6]

Candidates who have expressed serious interest:

Retired General Wesley Clark of Arkansas (WesPAC - Securing America)[7]
Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts (Keeping America's Promise)[8]
Reverend Al Sharpton of New York [9] "

That list might be a little behind, but to be fair we do have a pretty good idea of who the options are.

There was only one link that was exceeding long, and the edit time has past. That alone shouldn't crash and burn this thread. So far I think it has had some interesting back and forth on how to link up pres & vice pres candidates and on who all might be running. Its a thread about a man who went to our school for undergrad like the majority of us, and who is running for the highest office in the nation. I think that warrants a thread, and this is the last post I'm going to spend on defending the merit of this thread topic's existence/quality.

"He was an early opponent of Bush administration policies on Iraq. In the fall of 2002, Obama stated: "I am not opposed to all wars. I'm opposed to dumb wars."

Obama I think could fit on the same ticket as Edwards with statements like this, where Hillary is diametrically opposed on one of the main democratic issues.

Quote :
"The pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States; Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats. But I've got news for them too. We worship an awesome God in the Blue States, and we don't like federal agents poking around in our libraries in the Red States. We coach Little League in the Blue States and yes, we got some gay friends in the Red States. There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and patriots who supported the war in Iraq. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America."

I think Obama can make a good unifier and pull in moderates & undecideds, and Edwards can be a leader among democrats since he isn't quite as middle of the road as Obama. This would also make Obama the prime dem candidate choice for pres down the road after having had experience with a national campaign like edwards as already had, and experience in a national office like VP.

you know what i mean though. you could argue that the poll was for ppl more informed on the issues, but otherwise it is all about name recognition to a decent degree. either you arent gonna choose someone you've barely heard of or you're gonna give more credence to those in the news as they seem more likely to be a viable candidate.

A: Edwards is in the top 3.

B: Only because the other potential candidates are unknown.

A: The likely other candidates are actually known.

B: Well by unknown I meant unheard of, so they just weren’t considered because they don’t have name recognition.

A: Exactly my point, Edwards has run a national campaign before and his name recognition helps make him a player at the top level in addition to his other qualifications. Edwards is in the top 3.

^^ you are missing my point. my point is that by the time elections roll around, others will be more known. sure he has a slight advantage that he has run nationally before, but he also lost. that could really go either way. it isnt like he's got that much more experience this time around (one of his perceived issues).

that others will be better known is not always a safe assumption. for instance, no matter how many times he runs, no one is going to know shit about kucinich. no matter how early he declared, no one is going to know shit about gravel.
however, it is pretty obvious guys like vilsack or richardson could catch fire and prove you correct.

If your family had gone through having Johnny's law firm file a bullshit suit against you in the mid 1990's you might understand. And yes, we won the case, but it still put some members of my family through enough misery and anxiety during the proceedings to instill a lifelong disdain for this man and his ilk in me.
I actually was at John's house once a few years later (around 1999) due to the fact that some of my friends knew his daughters. Someone asked me if I wanted to come inside and meet him, and I declined.

All I'm saying is, politics is basically a business like any other, and I know the things that motivate this man in business, and two things that are conspicuously absent are truth and justice.

But there are lots of people in here that will beleive every little rosy thing he says to get you vote and there isnt any way I can change that.

he claims UNC-CH as his "school" when he went to undergrad at State... far as I'm concerned thats enough for any State student that cares about his/her school to not vote for his shady ass

dude has a nice building on campus over there

nice seats at the dean dome

and stays conspicuously absent from Raleigh unless it's political appearance time because he knows jackasses here will vote for him because OMG HE WENT TO STATE... other than that he doesn't give a shit about the alumni, the students, or the school...

if dude is shady about this, why would he not be shady about more important matters

"I LIKE YOU PEOPLE HERE AT NCSU"

"I WENT HERE, I LOVE THIS PLACE BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH"

"I'M A WOLFPACKER RAH RAH RAH"

"VOTE FOR ME"

"haha look at these assholes that think I give a shit about this brick shithole, lets split and get to to the dean dome, my heels are playing duke!!!!1111"

fuck him, I hope he chokes on a piece of cheese

^^ I thought personal attacks weren't allowed here... I'm at least trying to be nicer to "you people", including the ones I dislike on here, it is after all, just a message board

"Bill Richardson, governor of the US state of New Mexico, has become the latest Democrat to declare an interest in the 2008 presidential election.
He has announced that he is setting up a presidential exploratory committee, the first step in the race.

Mr Richardson would become the first Hispanic president, if elected.

Former First Lady Hillary Clinton and African-American Senator Barack Obama are also running in what correspondents say will be a highly diverse contest

...

However, he does not have the level of support enjoyed by Senator Clinton, Senator Obama or John Edwards
"

BBC, more of an outside source, even puts Edwards as part of the top 3. And while I think it would be cool to see double barrier breaking team with a P & VP who both broke racial or gender barriers at that level, I expect that Edwards name will make it some where on the dem’s final ticket, although I’m not sure if it’ll be top or bottom.

medical malpractice is under reported and it is not the fault of the trial lawyers for high malpractice insurance rates. It's the fault of the insurance companies.
