We've had some rotten guys for President come and go, but at least a U.S. President has never been indicted for rape.

(President of Israel is mainly a ceremonial position.)

pretty sweet that they are actually gonna indict him. I have little faith that Gonzales would do anything of the sort in a similar situation.

you know i never really understood, why a government run by a PM would need/want a symbolic figurehead for a President. at least figurehead Monarch has historical/traditional relevance.

a lot of countries other than Israel have such people. Serbia and Montenegro for instance. France has a prime minister who has no power and a president who has power.

While it may be largely a figure head, the president of these countries do serve political purposes.

For instance here are the jobs of the President of Israel

* Signs every law (except those that pertain to the president's powers).
* Chooses a member of the Knesset to form the government in consultation with the parties making up the body.
* Confirms diplomats and receives foreign diplomats.
* Signs treaties, approved by the Knesset, with foreign countries
* Appoints judges to the Supreme Court (upon advice of the Judicial Appointments Committee).
* Appoints the governor of the Bank of Israel and other bureaucrats (upon advice of the Prime Minister).
* Furthermore, the president has the authority to pardon criminals and commute sentences.

This is why I think news should have to give the same amount of time and attention they did reporting the initial allegations to when they find out he's innocent. Then for 12 hours a day they have to play "President innocent" etc.

When that starts eating into their budget they'll stop reporting allegations and crap. I can walk up and accuse the current president of molesting me as a child and it will make national news. It's not true but it seems allegations are all that is needed in this day and age.
