What is the purpose of drilling a hole through the spine of a CD case?

A lot of CDs that I've bought have a small hole drilled into the uppper left hand corner of the case. You won't see this in retail stores...but alot of my used CDs and promos have this. I was wondering what this means.

They do it to promo CDs. I assume it's so whoever gets them won't be able to take them back to a retailer for a refund.

^ yep. The hole goes through the barcode that is printed on the CD. Take a look.

So basically, they were sent to radio stations, music magazines, etc. and the people there sold them to Schoolkids where you bought it out of the used section.

Awesome. So it's just to keep people from reselling or returning them as retails?
I took a look at a few of mine and some missed the barcode haha.

Back in the LP days, they used to cut one corner off of the sleeve. Same concept.

When I worked at Media Play they would give us promo cd's as rewards. They would have a hole through the barcode so that you can't sell it to a place that buys used cd's.

My favorite promo non-resale tag was when a booklet would be stamped with gold foil: "This recording is the property of Record Company X, is not for resale, and must be returned to Record Company X upon request."

Haha, yeah my friend ordered a Dillon Fence CD for me that had this stamp on it. The album was brand new, but it had the seal and the hole in it too. I guess some of these promos aren't even listened to and are resold..

i've got the u2 double disc 1980-1990 set from technician that had that boss gold lettering on it

funny thing is that they gave an extra sleeve without the text printed on it to swap out...haha

It's not always a hole. Sometimes it's a cut through the spine like on a band saw. These are also called "cut-outs".
