Anyone having a difficult time in this class? It seems like every day im in class its a bunch of random gibberish he puts up on the board that does not help me on the homework at all. What's the secret to doing good in his class? 1/31/2007 12:05:52 PM |

I just had Wu for MAE 435. I couldn't imagine taking him for MAE 315. I had Ro for 315 and I guess he was ok. I just know that I had a tough enough time in 315 without having to take it with Wu. 2/1/2007 2:01:22 PM |

Tran is the absolute man for 315. take it with him if you have the chance; you wont regret it. 2/1/2007 10:27:11 PM |

I think it was kinda messed up how when someone asked him to do an example from the book so we could get a better idea of how to approach the hw he was like "No that would be to easy for you." Uh no, that would help me actually learn something as opposed to sitting in class watching him work the same examples from the book and derive equations. 2/1/2007 10:35:20 PM |

Wu is really a good guy. Go talk to him and ask him for help on the homeworks. He will basically do the problems for you. As far as the test, get ahold of a test from 2-3 years ago cause he usually uses the same problems. Also, ask for an extra project. Ours was worth 10% extra on our final grade. 2/1/2007 11:17:45 PM |

me confused
anyway, i liked wu in 435. besides his way of saying "very large" and "theta", i think he did a decent job, although it wasn't the best. i didn't really get any help from besides a couple questions before/after class, but when i asked he was very helpful and friendly about it. just go talk to him if you are having trouble; he'll help you, that's his job.2/2/2007 2:18:56 PM |

What I meant was, someone asked him to work a problem from the end of the chapter and he refused. By going over book examples, I meant redoing the examples given within the chapter. 2/2/2007 5:04:33 PM |

i don't know why so many people complain about professors that use the book to teach. There is no reason for them to reinvent the wheel.
And if they use the book, you can actually pay attention to the process of the derivation/problem instead of being distracted by having to write it all down. And also you will have a source that matches exactly what the prof wants you to know. 2/3/2007 10:47:15 AM |

Why would I need someone to rewrite step by step what I can already read for myself from the book, that is reinventing the wheel. And great, I can derive an equation, but it won't do me any good if i've never seen an application in which it was used correctly, hence, an example. 2/4/2007 2:51:28 AM |

HAHA i was the guy who asked him to do an example from the book. I dont fucking get his class and it makes no sense. The freaking solutions manual for that class sucks balls too. 2/4/2007 3:06:26 AM |

if you are just going to stand in front of me for 50 minutes, 3 times a week and re-write the book...i would rather just fucking stay home.2/4/2007 10:25:07 AM |

^^^lol nice. You asked him to do an example, I was like hell yeah maybe we'll learn something now. When he said no, it was like a slap in the face. I agree with orangeaccord I'd rather not sit in class and waste my time when I can easily read the book myself and follow it better. 2/4/2007 3:17:41 PM |

if you can easily read the book yourself, then why don't you easily read some supplemental examples yourself? 2/4/2007 4:33:55 PM |

Doesnt make sense, thats like saying if you know how to drive a car, then you know how to drive a tanker truck. Especially in vibrations one problem is very different from another even if something slight is changed. Theres a few generic areas but it can be pretty complex if you're not the genius guy in class. 2/4/2007 6:00:56 PM |

most of the examples from the text are very basic compared to the homework problems. That makes it very difficult to be able to use examples in order to do homework problems. Very annoying. 2/4/2007 10:04:05 PM |

it makes perfect sense that if you can teach yourself one thing by reading a book about it, you can teach yourself another thing by reading a book about that
^ there isn't enough time in a class to go over an example of every type of problem you may face. the purpose of the class is to give you the tools necessary to approach the problems.2/4/2007 10:25:39 PM |

It's pretty hard to teach yourself out of the book even. The book we use this semester (Mechanical Vibrations 4th ed. by Singiresu Rao) is horrible. The examples it provides are not helpful to solving homework problems and it just throws information at you instead of explaining it in human terms i can actually use to solve a real problem. 2/5/2007 12:25:46 AM |
