The best thing that could happen is that people lose office because of this. The signs didn't cause a panic -- the fucking Boston security forces caused the panic. Everyone else walked and drove by them, maybe even smiled.

The charges from Boston PD will be dropped. There's no way they can enforce a charge of any kind in a criminal court. They might slap his hand, give him a small fine for disrupting the peace or something, and get a "very stern" lecture not to do it again. He just got arrested so that Boston officials could save some face over their overreaction to a laughably harmless incident.

It's further underscored by the fact that these devices have apparently been in many other cities for several weeks - dozens have been in LA, Seattle, Chigago and NY. I read (on my phone, no link) that the Seattle Chief of Police said they've been aware of them in Seattle for several weeks and have not received "a single 911 call".

Not to be totally cliché, but this is the media's fault. The city wants to know who to blame? Blame the fucking media, who pick up a story like this, then put it on BREAKING NEWS all over the place with no facts or knowledge to back it up. I have no idea how exactly it all started. It could, for example, have started with a single concerned (but not too bright) citizen who called the police or 911. Who know what would have happened - maybe they could send a cop out to check it out and confirm it's nothing serious, who could then spread the word out to the rest of the police force. But instead, the (possible) 911 call, or the alert to the police was probably intercepted by a TV station or soemthing, who decided to go "live on the scene" with bullshit instead of waiting for the police to do their work.
