^^eh I can see it with something like diamond rings for engagement since it can be a lot of money but i think youre going a little overboard on some things. kids? Thats completely fine if you dont want kids but they are certainly not a 'tradition'.

At the rate youre going I think youd rather have the human race not exist at all

There is avoiding things that cost money and you dont really believe in wasting money on them, and there is taking all the fun out of life. as sober said, all of life is silly traditions.

Meh. there is a lot of societal pressure to have kids, which is why I consider it a silly tradition. If most people really thought about the cost/benefit of kids they wouldn't have any. Most of them are "Oops, got preggo and now we're gonna keep it"

I am okay with people that really WANT and can afford kids having them, I just think we should get rid of gov assistance and make people realize the true cost of being too stupid to use a condom.

It everyone felt free to do what they wanted instead of what they were "supposed" to (aka no silly traditions) the human race would still go on it'djust be a LOT more fun. And I might not get as many tatts because more of the things I want now would be cliche and overdone if everyone felt free to get them if they wanted.

having kids is the biggest tradition of the entire human race

it's "traditional" for a woman to have kids, etc

you make it sound like having kids is like buying a new car or something. how do you quantify the "benefit" of having kids? sounds kind of self centered to me.

on topic: i'm sad that the picture of the ring i got my fiance is all jacked now. i guess i can re-upload it, but i cant go back to page 3 or whatever to edit the old picture out.

also, it sucks that diamonds are so expensive, cause they're a pretty cool gem. i hope the cultured diamond industry gets bigger.

I'm getting close to making the big purchase here soon. Her sister gets married in August so I am going to wait until then to propose. She has told me that she really doesn't want the big diamond sticking out and she preferes something a little more stream lined. So I have been looking at a couple of different things:

I think this might be the one I end up going with because I know that she likes Saphires, and it still has diamonds but not the large setting diamond that she's not interested in. I'm also thinking about getting this with Emeralds instead of Saphires because its her birthstone, but I don't think I like the green as much as the blue with the platinum. What do you girls think?

I'm also looking at a couple of rings from Novell:

Opinions?

i guess, thats hard to argue. I dont consider something like that to be a tradition considering, if we didnt do it we wouldnt exist anymore. Tradition to me is in the way you raise it, how the parenting is done (mother and father roles etc.) I dont think that eating, using the restroom, or making love is a tradition, I think it is nature.

So I dont really see it as "Traditional" for a woman to have kids since. Maybe if you had a choice between whether the man or women got pregnant then the "Tradition" could be that woman have the kids even though both are capable. But only one is naturally biologically capable. I dont see procreation as tradition though the WAY you go about it CAN be tradition (whether you believe in being married or being out of wedlock when you have kids etc.) I guess you could say its a fine line but that is how I view it. To me there is a big difference.

^^^^ I definately like those. I would go with one of the colored ones if you wanted to put a wedding band next to it. I like the sapphires better than the emeralds, I wouldn't worry about it being her birthstone, maybe yours would be nice though? I like the 3rd one a lot too, but it probably wouldn't work next to a wedding band (thats if you want one)

I don't care if you think I'm bitter. I just refuse to participate in traditions. I might do something that's traditional because I want to, but it's just a coincidence and not because of societal pressure.

I'm sure a lot of people would be miserable leading my life because the societal pressure to conform would be too much for them, but it makes me happy and that's all that matters. If I was a good little drone and listened to what I was told I'd already be dead so time to do what makes me happy is just gravy.

eh i think youre giving yourself too much credit saying most people couldnt live without conforming like you have I dont think most of us in here (at least not myself) are living much differently than you are I would guess. Making a decision not to wear a diamond ring isnt exactly that hard, and I have felt absolutely no societal pressure to do so. Sure the IDEA was sparked from society and tradition, but whether I get or do not get an engagement ring isnt going to affect whether we do or do not get married, that has already been decided.

I believe you think you are defying culture a lot more than you actually are, when in fact you are just doing what makes you happy, which is great, but it is not all that different than most people I know.

yeah well maybe there are lots of people that participate in traditions because they want to also, and not because "society" is forcing them to do so.

I do not, but no offense, that doesnt do anything for me. I have a hard time believing what circumstances those could be that allow you to think you are so defiant of our culture that you cant talk about or that people would not know about you. once again, not trying to offend at all because I do not know what circumstances you are talking about, but I just dont buy that. At least not enough to tolerate your responses on here that make it obvious (and slightly elitist) you think you are a non-conformist and we are all drones. If you were living completely off the grid outside of our society I might tolerate talk like that.

But back to talking about some pretty rings

The first things you listed "eating, using the restroom" are natural: but you have a choice (which will not affect your survival = I guess that's where I see the difference) in the matter of your procreation. So I think continues on as a "tradition" rather than as a primal urge. I'm not currently feeling the need to pop out children as I sit here, unlike needing to go pee.

Also, I dig this one:

mostly because I'm not really into colored stones

I dunno, I kinda like the emerald one. I would say do both...but green and blue might not look so hot together.
Green definitely stands out. I would say it also has to depend on her skin color. An olive, dark or pale yellow skin tone would help the emerald, and a pinkish skin tone would help the sapphire.

Personally, I like the third one; it's unique, stylish and won't snag on anything. But, like others have said, it may not work with the wedding band.

I wouldn't think so but you could just go with a very basic or traditional silver band and it would look find I think.

^^^I like it too, and it reminds me a lot of my friend's engagement and wedding band set. Her engagement ring is a wide band with cut outs covered in tiny diamonds. Her wedding band is a smaller, solid band similar to that one with tiny diamonds all around. both were bought at an estate sale.

THat was my thought is how this one would work. Would it need a wedding band? I think that she really wants a wedding band so I wasn't so sure how it would work out. One idea was that she could have both and I could give the one with the stones as an engagement ring and get the other ring to be slimmer and used as the wedding band, but I dunno. Just need to work it out I guess.

"My mom is crazy. Still acts like me and my brother are 5. He loves being taken care of, I fucking hate it. She has an opinion on everything, usually wrong and she will always make sure you listen to it. I didn't want to fuck up a kid like that so I got my tubes tied, had to threaten bodily harm if she tried to stop the doc because she thinks I should be finding a guy so I can be a stay at home mom instead of in grad school.

My mom wanted so bad to pretend that we were kids forever, she home schooled me and my brother. I'd lock myself in my room with the textbooks because she'd make a huge fucking ordeal out of "teaching" us and bore me out of my mind.

The worst is the religiousness on top of all of this. I wasn't allowed to date in high school, then was afraid they'd quit filling out the FAFSA if I did in college (they submitted it late twice, had to change schools because of it). So much other religious BS as well. I had to wear ugly loose clothing all through high school/college too. I can only begin to describe how having christian biology text books in high school made my life more difficult in college.

My mom asks me the same fucking question at least a half dozen times too. damn, 9:30 am and I need a drink now."

i could be wrong, but i have a feeling that might be part of the reason lewoods is so bitter... especially about having children.

also,

that is really awesome, i think that would make a really awesome wedding band. i'm not a big fan of the colored stones for an engagement ring, but that's just my opinion.

I just look at it from a purely practical standpoint, instead of getting all emotional about the idea of spawning.

If the world is already overpopulated (so there'll be plenty of people around to wipe my ass when I'm too old to), kids are really fucking expensive, and a dog is more fun why get fat and stretch marks pushing out a kid? Makes no sense. Easier to train a dog to get you beer from the fridge, and house training only takes a week or two.

I probably will end up with a single plain ring just to make my life easier, but it's not an "investment" (you'd be lucky to get 1/2 the appraised value if you sell it on any jewelry) or a symbol of how much I'm loved or how big of a sugar daddy I got. I DO think it's funny to see women shopping for fair trade coffee at whole foods with a big rock on their hand. Umm, it's going to take a LOT of coffee to make up for that ring.

^this is my engagement ring

we got it at joint venture jewelers in cary
i fell in love with it as soon as i saw it... i just love antique rings from the early 1900s.
you can find some really beautiful ones if you search for antique or art deco engagement rings

there are also some really pretty modern rings out on the market like ones by ayesha mayades
that you can find at:
http://www.ayeshastudio.com/ayeshastudio/rings

keep in mind these are not for a traditional girl
