Complain about an incompetant advisor. I've had about damn enough.

Do i need to go to the Dean or asst Dean of Engineering? I've already had to go there once for something similar.

Thanks

your dean's sup (probably the head of the dept) can tell you where to direct your complaint, if not to them.

Way back in T101, one of our graded assignments was to have our advisor sign off on our plan of work.

mine never did. never answered emails. NOTHING. So when I went to tell the instructor, he was horrified and had me a new advisor the next day.

She's a great teacher (have her now), but she fucking sucks as an advisor.

this is the 5 advisor ive had in 4.5 yrs, and this is the third time they have told me to take a class, and after i have taken it they come back and say that the class doesnt count. And now their trying to say im not going to graduate because of some lame ass english class they told me to take.

On top of that, when i was a freshman, they took our 2 freshman reading and comp. classes and turned them into one, then before my senior year they came out and told everyone they had to take another english to fulfill the elective. I specificly asked my advisor about the class i was going to sign up for and they told me yes, now i cant graduate because they fucked up.

And on top of that, the dumbass waits till almost 5:00 on a friday to send me this email, knowing that i wouldnt be able to go up there and raise all kinds of hell right then

anyway, I;m done with it.

The dept. head is one of my teachers, so i might mention something to him after class, but if i dont get anywhere, I'm gonna go straight to dr lovelle or brian khoeler and raise hell

seriously...you should be on top of your education

not your advisor that "advises" 50 other people in addition to you every semester

you're obviously a fucking moron, why dont go back and troll chit chat. Also, my advisor "advises" more then 50 others more along the lines of 2000 or more, showing how easy it is for them to be incmpetant and or make mistakes. which is why another reason why i want to go talk to someone higher up, so they know the problems associated with having that many students with 1 shitty advisor. also, the class i took is listed under the elective on the cirriculum website

I didnt ask you to judge my career as student, i just asked where to go. I know its obvious that you know all and have never had any problems. So why dont you GTFO.

this isnt a GRP elective

Dr Gonzalez always told me to go by this website
https://www.regrec.ncsu.edu/scripts/RegRec/adadgbk.pl?curr=BS&dgr_key=14ME%20%20%201998%20&title=MECHANICAL%20ENGINEERING

if you click on ENG 112 it is listed there, thats why i thought it was ok

I have already meet all my GRP electives

"someone higher up"

you don't want someone higher up

you want someone who only deals with graduation policies

and that's just about all that the people in page hall are good for

so if you can't figure out how to graduate yourself...then that's where you go

that's why those guys have jobs...it's not really b/c they're higher up...it's because somebody realized that there's a bunch of incompetent people who can't read and figure shit out for themselves

your advisor is busy with their research and teaching you and is only as incompetant as you allow him to be...meaning it all eventually falls back on you

if you click on ENG 112 it takes you to the ENG course catalogue that describes every ENG course offered...

i think that speaks for itself

yeah except when i say specificly to them "What class can i take? Can i take this class?"

then it is their fault. You are an example of someone who thinks they know everything about everything. So, I'm not going to argue with you, because you're a moron, and have no idea what the situation is. Thx

when you click ENG 112 it brings you to the entire listing of ENG courses available; that link is not showing what is used to replace 112. for example, if you click on ENG 331 it brings you to the description of that course. because 111 and 112 does not exist anymore, it just opens that page and stays at the top. i'm sorry to say, but you made a critical mistake on your part due to misinterpretation.

MyCarSucks, first let me give you a piece of advice, don't respond with negative / hostile comments in your own thread. If somebody is trolling you, ignore them ... but don't call them a moron. Makes the rest of us question your intentions and whether we should take the time to help you.

Quote :
""thats why i asked my advisor""

How did you ask your advisor? By email? By phone? In person? When did you talk with them, around registration time, during the summer, in the middle of the semester? How many hours did you spend per session to make sure your degree audit was correct? (Note, I'm not saying one thing or another right now, but I would like some hard numbers to draw some data off of).

Actually its close to 1000 students according to (http://www.mae.ncsu.edu/about.html). And yes, a disproportionate number of students to advisors is a cause for serious concern to bring before somebody in the dean of engineering's office. You want to talk about how to lose alumni donations, how faculty retention sucks (from job dissatisfaction from teaching), etc. stuff like this plays a significant role.

If you haven't been involved much with your department yet, there is a LOT of stuff that goes on behind the scenes students are never aware of. Make sure you understand these things (i.e. politics) before you go and present your case. Communication between a department and its students has never been easy to facilitate. A single individual's perspective is going to be lost; all 0.1% of the total MAE students bring a formal complaint about the advising they received, oh noes. You get 100 students, or 10%, that will raise a few eyebrows. Talk to other students and student organization to learn more about the department and some of its practices. E-council is a good place to start.

On an ignorant guess, I can tell you its a matter of $$$ which is preventing more advisors from being in place. The money is and is not there for another advisor, depending on whether there is a true need for one to be in place. However, the communication most likely is not there for them to be aware of such a need. If you are truly concerned about the need for another advisor in the department, take the time and go through the proper channels to make it happen. Several of us on here can provide guidance for how to go about doing that. Otherwise, let the thread die.

Either the school should have useful, knowledgable advisors

OR

Make advising optional and let us keep the same PIN for registration every year

Well i went and talked to my advisor today, and discussed with her the problems ive had in the past, and how i had to solve them. And she went ahead and got approval from the proper sources for me, and got the class to count.

I dont think its that she was completely incompetant, i think she just skimmed through it, and sent the email before she had thought too much about it.

Either way she took care of. However, i think graduating seniors get a survey to fill out, and I do plan on ranting about a shortage of advisor on it. And possible discussing the problem with the dept head, who is one of my techers this semester

Good deal. Make an appointment. A focused 30-60 minute discussion will go a lot more good than a 5 minute "I'm on my way out the door" discussion after class.
