Quote : | "Short night for Sendek Coach tossed in ASU loss
Norm Frauenheim The Arizona Republic Feb. 2, 2007 12:00 AM Defeat is getting old, but so much else is new for Herb Sendek in his first year as Arizona State's basketball coach.
He had never been ejected.
Until Thursday night. advertisement
After 10 years at North Carolina State and three at Miami (Ohio), Sendek got the boot for the first time in ASU's 66-61 loss to Washington at Wells Fargo Arena.
Perhaps, there is a first time for everything, even if that doesn't include a Pac-10 victory this season. But Sendek never expected to get the news of ASU's 11th straight loss in a non-televised game while banished in a room without a view.
Sendek got the hook with 13:16 left after official Michael Reed charged him with two quick technical fouls.
Reed warned Sendek not to exhort the crowd. Sendek has been turning to the crowd and gesturing for cheers all season.
The initial response was mostly muted from a crowd that has been mute for years. But Reed responded by assessing the first technical. Sendek continued to ask for the crowd's support. That's when Reed asked him to leave with a second technical.
An irony is that Reed helped finish what was started by Sendek, who left the floor animated, angry and armed with every gesture other than goodbye.
The crowd of 7,164 came to life, mostly with boos for Reed. Suddenly, there was a pulse in a place that is often as lively as a tomb.
In a comment to a pool reporter, Reed said Sendek ran afoul of Rule No. 1096 by "inciting an undesirable response from the crowd after he had been asked not to do that."
But Sendek has been doing it all season.
"I wasn't trying to get the crowd to throw eggs at the officials," he said.
Instead, he said he wanted fans to applaud ASU guard Antwi Atuahene for a diving defensive gem that he compared to a Pete Rose play.
"I saw unbelievable hustle," Sendek said after ASU (6-14, 0-10 Pac-10) lost its 11th straight game. "I was asking fans to say 'Good job, Antwi.' I wasn't trying to incite the crowd to berate officials."
The Sun Devils already had begun to mount a comeback when Sendek was ordered to take walk. After trailing by 23 points at halftime, they strung together six steals and were within 10 when the whistles began to blow. The technical fouls allowed the Huskies (14-7, 4-6) to extend their advantage to 14 with four free throws. But the Sun Devils were suddenly as energized the crowd. ASU defense continued to dive from baseline to baseline and across sidelines, forcing the Huskies into 23.8 percent shooting in the second half.
ASU cut the margin back to 10, then eight, then five. With 1:14 left, they were within three, 61-58, thanks to two free throws from Allen Morill. But a running hook from and then two free throws from Washington guard Justin Dentmon during the final 41 seconds left ASU with a seven-point deficit and Washington ensured of its first road win.
ASU's loss was probably ensured by 31.8 percent shooting in the first half.
Sendek again shuffled his lineup. Steve Jones started in the backcourt instead of Christian Polk. But the move was just another spin in an offense loaded with only empty chambers. Shots are there. Shooters aren't.
Throughout the first half, ASU's attempts, mostly errant and often exasperating, filled Wells Fargo with familiar echoes of the ball's crashing off the rim, onto the floor and sometimes into the seats. Attempts filled the air, filled everything but the net.
There was some promise in the early minutes. The Sun Devils were within three about seven minutes after tipoff, thanks in part to Polk, who came off the bench and quickly hit a three-pointer. But it might as well have been a fuse on a faulty firecracker. The potential threat was extinguished almost as quickly as it appeared.
It was only re-ignited by Sendek in the wildfire of crazy second half. " |

i can't imagine how awkward the whole situation would've seemed to a State student who'd seen him in action before
at campout two years ago, Herb shows up with Oblinger bearing pizza for a pep speech of sorts. He starts the deal with something to the effect of, "Thank you guys so much for coming out here... your presence out here, it lifts me."
Lots of of , shoulder shrugs, and awkward silence followed until one guy started hollering and the rest of us all followed cue - it was really sad in a really sad kind of way
so maybe he's just trying to get off on a different foot out there, a livelier one, because he's seen what and where stoicism got him on the sidelines... namely, off of the ones in Raleigh

haha hes used to the crowd cheering form coaching here.
then he gets to ASU, loses 11 straight and finds the crown non-responsive. who woulda thunk.
he must be desperate tho. he looked like a dead man who the asst. coaches propped up every now and then on our sidelines. now hes all jumping around and yelling at the crown and getting thrown out of the game. 2/3/2007 9:14:49 AM |

he did, I guess nobody was watching.
In fact, he used to do the exact same thing here that he did there, he just never got ejected for it.

Yeah Herb started out last season as an absolute loon. He'd jump and scream and slap Evtimov and just generally act like a madman. As the season went on he seemed to get more and more tired and eventually just stood there and looked like he was begging the guys to do something instead of coaching. 2/3/2007 9:36:54 AM |

culture difference i guess... officials in the ACC expect the coaches to have some kind of positive or negative rapport with the crowd... they must be a little stodgier in the Pac-10...2/3/2007 10:02:53 AM |

Considering his team sucks talent wise and the Pac-10 is the most loaded conference in the country, 0-10 isn't that bad of a record given the situation.
Give the man some time.
NCSU's team sucks right now with Sidney Lowe, but you guys aren't calling for his head, why? Oh right, he doesn't have his players here.
(Don't get me wrong, I love Lowe and our team I'm just making an example) 2/3/2007 11:15:06 AM |

[OLD]....see Official ASU Thread
but I guess still worth repeating because ASU fans are geekin like crazy over Herb right now. They don't give a damn about the record, they just like to see in game adjustments and passion (which Herb is giving them). down 23 at halftime to Washington, Herb changed defenses and started pounding the ball down low and cut it to 3 points with a minute or so left in the game.
they absolutely love Herb.

herb didn't cut it to 3, he was in the locker room at that point. what he did do was cut a 23-point lead down to 10 before being thrown out, which is still impressive. after the 4 technical shots the lead was increased to 14. 2/3/2007 1:47:42 PM |

^^ASU loves Herb. The last coach was FIRED, not RUN OFF for a reason....they have NO talent at all. You guys think our team has little talent...if you would watch an ASU game you would know that Nieman would be their best player. His recruiting class for next year is already top 20. 2/3/2007 11:59:06 PM |
