i doubt its a joke, it's actually not a bad idea as the current policy seems to be allowing the taliban to regain stregnth. Counterintuitive, but at this point, we have to think out of the box. For it to be truly effective, govenments would have to pretty much buy entire crops.....quotas won't work imo.

It's not illegal to play poker with your friends.

What IS illegal is to rake $100,000+/year from poker games while renting out warehouses and breaking all kinds of alcohol distribution laws.

Giving the people playing a ticket is kinda lame, but I mean come on its such a minor charge that it's really not a big deal. What sucks is that WRAL completely went overboard by printing their names and addresses as if they are convicted felons or something.

The drug war, for the past decade, has provided billions of dollars in aid to Colombia to help eradicate the supply of cocaine. One measure taken has been the fumigation of coca plantations with herbicides provided by our government.

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N23259602.htm

Wouldn't this be somewhat akin to an anti-smoking campaign spraying chemicals over North Carolina's tobacco crops?

Quote :
"Putumayo officials and farmers acknowledge fumigation has destroyed coca, but say it also hits legal crops, drives illicit plants into remoter areas and forces residents from their plots, sometimes across the frontier.

"It's a short cut. The alternative is what they call nation-building, it's a hard sell because it costs a lot and you don't see results immediately," said Adam Isacson, Colombia expert at Washington's Center for International Policy."

Quote :
"On the frontier, Colombian municipalities say they need more alternatives beyond fumigation as coca growers are replanting and keeping coca alive by pruning crops to protect them from spraying. They lose one harvest out of four or five.

"It doesn't finish off the coca," San Miguel municipal agriculture chief Rodrigo Luna said."

How accurate do you think this is?

Liberals:
"The government should allow us to possess, use, and sell drugs."

Conservatives:
"The government shouldn't have the authority to ban possession, use and sale of drugs."

I can understand them not mass marketing heroin but damn.. there is really NO reason marijuana should be illegal. It has far less negatives than alcohol but the average stereotypical American hears weed and thinks it's some fucking insane terrible drug that ruins peoples life's...it's fucking horse shit. The worst part is that there are legitimate medical uses for it that can't be fully explored because of all the closed minded people

^^^
I would say that's accurate in an idealogical sense. However, I wouldn't say that many politicians, be they Democrats or Republicans, would be very willing to openly encourage a decrease in Drug War spending.

Of course, I don't think very many politicians would be willing to encourage decreased spending on a lot of other governmental policies either. I don't know if it's an issue of losing votes or losing money, but our politicians seem to be content with the current status quo as it is.

No, it really IS illegal to play poker with your friends (if you're playing for money)

According to North Carolina's laws, something of value must be bet in order to consider it gambling. The law states, "any person or organization that operates any game of chance or any person who plays or bets on any game at which money, property or any other thing of value is bet, whether the same be in stake or not, shall be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor."

http://www.pokernews.com/news/2005/07/north-carolina-poker-laws-challenged.htm

Now, they may not care, but it is illegal.

John Ehrlichman, Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs under President Richard Nixon:

Quote :
"The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."
