anyone know of a script that can do what tinyurl does that i can host myself?
i mean i can do it manually with meta-refresh's but i like the one-click bookmarklet, and i'd like the ability to track hits and stuff
tinyurl is down at the moment if you haven't guessed by now
edit-- i just read http://www.37signals.com/svn/archives2/tinyurl_vs_url123.php i need something that can instantly modify .htaccess files on the server i've tried YaSUS: http://yasus.sourceforge.net/ but their demo site didn't work either

add simple logging scripts to a php form where you submit a url, it queries a database (or flat text list) of hashed urls, and either spits out the list/db entry or makes a new hash and hosts/forwarding entry. put a gotcha on there to prevent bots and you're golden. security shouldn't be a huge ordeal either.
[Edited on February 6, 2007 at 9:10 PM. Reason : the hash could also be made into an iframe hosted at urdns.blah/hash.html] 2/6/2007 9:09:38 PM |

yeah it's back up but that outage cost me around 600 hits that i would have normally gotten
it wasn't a big deal - no money involved or anything, but my content didn't get out because of it.
i just want to host it myself
that link you gave me is just a middle-man script that makes a tinyurl.com URL for you 2/8/2007 1:41:27 AM |

can i just use a perl script to edit .htaccess ?
i don't know perl at all but i figure file manipulation can't be too difficult to copy from some other perl script.
maybe a php script to make a javascript bookmarklet for, and that php script submits to a cgi script to edit the htaccess file.
or can i just securely edit the htaccess file using PHP? 2/8/2007 5:03:10 AM |
