Quote : | "With every Pac-10 loss, Arizona State closes in on history By ANDREW BAGNATO, AP Sports Writer February 15, 2007
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Arizona State coach Herb Sendek wore an all-black sweatsuit to his news conference this week. The outfit reflected ASU's season, but not Sendek's mood.
He's remained upbeat even as his Sun Devils (6-18, 0-13 Pac-10) try to avoid becoming the first Pac-10 team to go winless in conference play since the league expanded to 10 schools in 1978-79.
"Nobody has me on any type of careful watch," Sendek said with a wry smile. "I'm fine. I really am. In fact, I've been in some cases worse off than I am now."
His team, unfortunately, has not. The Sun Devils' 14 straight losses overall are a school record, and they are closing in on the 37-year-old school record for losses in a season, 22.
The Pac-10 has had some woeful basketball teams. Even the worst -- Arizona in 1982-83 and Washington State in three other seasons -- managed at least one conference victory.
Some teams chase history. The Sun Devils hope to dodge it.
"We don't want to be those guys that show up in the record books," said sophomore forward Jeff Pendergraph, who averages 12.3 points and a team-high 9.3 rebounds per game.
The Sun Devils figure to be heavy underdogs in their last five regular-season games.
On Thursday night, they host No. 5 UCLA. Three nights later, No. 22 USC comes to town. And No. 19 Arizona visits next week in what shapes up as a virtual home game for the Wildcats, whose campus is 90 miles from Wells Fargo Arena.
The Sun Devils finish the regular season with games at Stanford on March 1 and at California on March 3; ASU is a combined 6-18 in the Bay Area since 1994-95.
"Fourteen losses in a row, and then we could be the first team to go winless in the Pac-10 -- it's a lot of motivation," Pendergraph said.
The Sun Devils have not lacked motivation. Former ASU coach Bill Frieder says that's a tribute to Sendek, who promised that it would take time to rebuild when he replaced the fired Rob Evans last April.
"I think Herb is doing a fantastic job," said Frieder, who follows the Pac-10 as a broadcaster.
"There's no question that the program was down when he got there," Frieder said. "It's just amazing to me that he's kept them extremely competitive. Usually when you lose, you start to have attitude problems. Guys start complaining. That hasn't happened."
Sendek said he doesn't expect his players' emotions to become a problem.
"To be honest with you, it's not something that we've had to invest a lot of time addressing," he said. "In other words, we don't come in and try to be Dr. Phil or Bob Newhart.
"Our time and our energy is invested on getting better," Sendek said. "What can we learn, and what do we have to do right now to move forward?"
What they need is more experience. More scorers. More good fortune.
A combination of offseason roster turnover, a series of close losses and a ruthlessly demanding league have conspired against Sendek and his young team, which has three freshmen and a sophomore playing important roles.
The Sun Devils are 2-10 in games decided by five points or fewer. Their last four losses -- two against ranked opponents -- have come by a combined 14 points.
The closest shot at victory came Feb. 3, when ASU battled back from a 16-point second-half deficit against then-No. 18 Washington State, only to lose when Christian Polk's 3-pointer clanged off the rim at the buzzer.
"They had Washington State (beaten)," Arizona coach Lute Olson said on the Pac-10 coaches teleconference this week. "That last shot was down in the bucket and then back out again. But it's just a matter of learning how to win. They have played people really tough and I think that will continue to be the situation."
The Sun Devils could use senior guard Kevin Kruger, who led the team in scoring last year but transferred to UNLV in the offseason to play for his father, Lon. Another backcourt starter, Bryson Krueger, was kicked off the team for off-the-court problems last summer.
Throw in the strength of the Pac-10, which has had seven different teams in the Top 25 this season, and it's easy to see why the Sun Devils are still looking for that elusive first conference victory.
If there's an upside to being down, it's that there's plenty of opportunities for newcomers. Sendek and his staff have put together a recruiting class led by touted shooting guard James Harden of Artesia High School in Lakewood, Calif. (Sendek's staff includes Harden's former coach at Artesia, Scott Pera.)
The Sun Devils also will add 6-foot-10 center Eric Boateng, a transfer from Duke, where he earned little playing time as a freshman.
The future appears brighter. But Sendek, who left North Carolina State to accept a five-year contract that pays $900,000 per year, won't look ahead because he wants to help this group keep improving, even if it doesn't show in the standings.
"Our guys are doing the best they can right now," Sendek said. "And the fact that it hasn't been validated with a win doesn't take away from the process."" |

i get a big kick out of people saying "give sidney time...he has to get his own players and teach his system" and then turn around and say "haha, look how much herb sucks at ASU!"
although sidneys situation wasnt ideal, it was a lot better then ASUs.

I'm not hating on any fans for things they said years ago. They are entitled to think we can do better and I actually mostly agree with them. I just don't see the point in making fun of the guy for having a worse season at a new program then they had last year. In case you forgot we are 13-11 after 5 straight NCAA appearances. Of course I didn't expect Sid to do much more but that isn't the point. Stones. Glass houses. Etc...
As for the last capitalized line. I assume you can read so I'm not sure why you are telling me that..

Folks, I wasn't a Herb fan, but there's not many coaches who could do a lot better with what he's got.
The Pac-10 is solid this year, and he's got absolutely nothing to work with...not to mention a 'gimmicky' offense that takes awhile to learn 2/15/2007 1:08:42 PM |

Quote : | "because it seems to be quantitative validation that it indeed was time for sendek to leave our storied program" |
Not really. I agree it was a good time for him to leave but this doesn't validate anything because the talent level on that team is even less than last year. I mean if you think his record validates his leaving does that mean that our record is a reflection on the new coach? I mean surely he must've been the wrong choice since we are worse than we have been in 5 years.
Now obviously I don't think Sidney was the wrong choice. I'm just trying to stay consistent with your point..
Quote : | "i mean come on if florida state goes 3-9 in football this year with Chuck onboard while NCSU goes 7-5 wouldnt you think that was funny too?" |
Not really, because I'm not vindictive. I hope both Chuck and Herb go on to be succesful as long as it is not to our detriment. They both did some good things for the University and I don't see why I would want to see them fail.

the simple fact is some people just cant let go of herb...they would rather hate on State fans than acknowledge the fact that Herb has LOST 14 STRAIGHT GAMES
you can spin that shit any way you want to but herb has lost 14 straight games...its a school record...its not good...its not decent...its fucking horrible

Quote : | "we just need to stop validating firing herb sendek from ncsu by using his failures at asu as the main reason" |
How bout validating him getting fired leaving on his own by our current coach beating our most hated rival and getting our team up for the most important game of the year? you know how Sidney (who is NC STATE's COACH) beat Roy? Roy, that coach the Sendek could never beat, and could seldom only lose to by 20 points?

I live in Pac-10 country where all their games are on TV. I know plenty about them. Do you? It doesn't really seem so. It was implicit in your argument about comparing their record to NCSUs that talent levels need to be taken into account.
Quote : | "maybe you guys would prefer herb was 11-2 so you could laugh at "our sucky fans" about how they ran herb out of town...are some of you so mad that herb hasnt won a conference game because somewhere deep down you want him to do better at ASU than Sid at NCSU? do you have more allegiance to a former coach than your permanent college?" |
Or you can stick to what I said and not try and put things into my mouth. I wouldn't mind Herb being 11-2 there because I think he is a good guy who deserves success. That has nothing to do with NC State though and I certainly would not try and "rub it in" whatever that is supposed to mean. I don't know how much more clear I can make it than I already have that it is completely 100% possible to still hope the old coach is able to find success while being 100% fully behind the new coach.

This thread isn't about Sidney. I've sung his praises many, many times and even said he did a much better job of getting the guys up for their rivalry game than Herb EVER did. I'm not sure what you're trying to prove honestly.

Don't you get it? When you try and compare Herb's record at ASU to Sidney's at NCSU it is implicit in your argument. Good christ... Fells, Costner, Atsur, Mccauley, and Grant are ALL better than the 2nd best player on ASU and it's not even really close. The only player that should even be in that league is Pendergraph. Therefore it is useless to try and make comparisons about their records like you want to do.
I'm not even defending Herb. His record is shitty there and there is no way around that. However, his talent level is sickly for a major conference team. It's an utter disgrace.2/15/2007 2:34:41 PM |
