I'm looking for some banner free PHP and MySQL hosting. There are tons of em listed here: http://www.free-webhosts.com/reviews/Your-Websites.php
But I have had no luck because all that I have tried do not allow .htaccess. Anyone know of a free one that does??

I have the 2.99/mo account with 1 and 1. Actually you can get 50% off so its like 1.50 a month. You get like 10GB space and 200GB transfer, plus PHP, 10 MySQL databases and you can do the .htaccess. Note that 1 and 1 does some funky things with .htacces, so you have to play with it alitte. 2/17/2007 5:39:49 PM |

^ their control panel sucks real bad. no real control and no shell. takes minutes for changes in mysql.
I droped it after 1 day and got a Bluehost acount 2/17/2007 8:50:45 PM |

1and1 works fine for me, I have used it for years... and I do have shell access and fast mySQL.
I prefer Dreamhost though for all my real projects, and use 1and1 as my domain manager. 2/17/2007 9:40:36 PM |

1and1 definitely has a DIFFERENT control panel and setup, but they allow not only htaccess, but also custom php.ini configs for EVERY domain. And their MySQL servers are bad ass.
The only big complaint I had with them is their email address login auto-naming, but they fixed that recently. 2/17/2007 10:16:58 PM |

In my opinion 1and1 sucks. here is why:
dont allow all overrides (i cant override what files php parses for example) way downlevel ver of mysql. hard to believe for the "worlds #1 webhost" database names are generated by them, not you. ftp login names are generated by them, not you. stuff that should take seconds to apply takes ~30 minutes (like subdomains, changing ftp pw).
you really do get what you pay for. But i'd argue free-webhosts is better and oh yea its free. luckily thye have 90day money back. 3/19/2007 10:50:34 PM |

yes you can

3.23, which I agree is a bit aged, but hardly unusable or even difficult. If you are REALLY taking advantage of 4.1 or 5.0, you probably aren't going to be on their shared hosting for long anyway.

+100 points for security +10,000 points for securty
and it takes 5-10 minutes to reflect damn near any change that requires their acknowledgement. keeps someone from breaking into your account and changing/stealing/redirecting everything all at once.3/19/2007 11:30:38 PM |
