my brother was in the brickyard like 100 yards from the guy that shot himself in the face. that guy actually survived that incident

when i was at NCSU i was in the lee computer hall when some kid jumped off the top floor of one of the buildings. he hit so hard that the computers jiggled a little bit.

i'd say in the five years i went to NCSU and the two years i lived near it there were way more suicides than you'd ever think. it was like every year at least two people were killing themselves. it got to the point where you'd hear about one and just sort of shake it off....

This thread gave me reason to use my handy-dandy campus map (http://www.ncsu.edu/campus_map/north.htm)

What was the story on the guy who shot himself in the brickyard?

If the Field House is supposedly haunted, I wonder if the ghosts will take up residence in the new parking deck that will replace the Field House (scheduled for demolition after the math & stats building is finished...)

I was a patient at Dix when I was younger. That building next to it is Cherry, and that's the 'long-term' adolescent ward, and I stayed there for a time. The staff also told us that that grave there is his. We had a car wash on that back loop to raise money for a trip (yeah, it was pretty cushy, aside from being in the looney bin ), and we wandered over there.

Lots of creepy/interesting/intruiging stuff on the DDH campus. I like going back there every once in a while.

"suicide 14 years ago in the brickyard"

Happened in 1993 - Dude was leaning against one of those big trees in the grassy area in front of DH Hill during lunch (tons of people were out there). He was just talking to himself, getting all angry. Then he shot himself in the face.

He was still breathing when the paramedics arrived, but died later.

Also, some dude who wasn't even a student at State jumped off Sullivan in the Spring of 1997. Fucker hit the ground, bounced right up, took three steps, and fell over dead.

I saw both of these events personally, and they both sucked.

Oh, I forgot to add, there was a grad student who hanged himself in Watauga Hall once. The only reason they found him was because of the smell. Technician made some joke about it, and got in real trouble from Chancellor Monteith.

[Edited on February 20, 2007 at 11:42 PM. Reason : forgot about the hanging dude.]

There's nothing cushy about a state mental institution.

and i cant comment on the bouncing up or whatever, seems like i heard something like that but thats how those legends get started. "seems like i heard"

I remember the Cox thing because I was walking through the tunnel and from the Williams side saw the gathering, but I was late for class, so I kept walking. I heard about it from someone who was in class with me.

Sullivan I remember because I guy I was dating was living there - I wasn't here then.

Spring of 2004, a guy died on campus, he was from Rocky Mount. For some reason I think his roommate found him, I think it was a heartattack or something similar. I know Technician covered it (I remember looking the guy up in the online directory) and I had conversation with a professor who told us that some of the higher ups had warned him to be on the look out for upset students.

The sullivan jumper that has been discussed a few times in this thread did not happen in the Spring of 07. It happened in the Spring of '08 because Fall '07 was my first year and I had friends that lived in the 12th floor of Sullivan. For some reason I want to think that I was actually visiting them when it happened.

anyone herd of the Devils Tramping ground in Siler City.
Quote :
"A scary, scary place. A barren circle in the middle of the forest. One of North Carolina's
oldest legends. For hundreds of years, nothing has grown in the eerie 40-ft spot. Locals claim that
things left in the ring at night are gone by dawn. Explanations of the strange place include Indian
folklore, Druid priests, extra-terrestrial visits and a bizzare Satanic tale. The story claims that the
Devil himself makes nightly walks here, keeping the ground sterile and charred as he plots
his evil plans. Changing very little since it was discovered long ago, even scientists from the
Department of Agriculture cannot explain the mysterious Devil's Tramping Ground."

apparently its a 40ft perfect circle, and no one has successfully camped a night out there.

Pretty much all that you have heard is incorrect. I went to Riverside High School and a friend of mine and a group went and camped there one night. They had the permission of the person who owned the property.

First, it is not a perfect circle. Over the years, kids have come to that property and vandalized it and thrown a bunch of the dirt from the "circle" all over the place. I am not sure if it ever was a perfect circle, but it isn't any longer.

Other than it being creepy, not much happened. A cop drove by and saw their camp. He interrogated them briefly, found out they had permission and were not drinking, then left.

Not much mystery there. I doubt they were the first.

So,

Chancellor Riddick had a daughter that was a head nurse in the infirmary - the old alumni building (now Winslow Hall). When the Spanish Flu Pandemic occurred in 1919, she caught it from one of the students and died in that building. I don't remember her name though.

BTW, the old alumni bldg (from that pic that Pyro posted) was built in the style of the 2nd french empire. Basically the thinking was "omg we have lots of money b/c we are prospering, let's decorate our bldg's to show you how well off we are."
Characteristics:
High Pitched - Hip Roofs
Very ornate molding and roof decorations
Usually ornate balustrades/fences on roofs
fancy porches

All of this was removed in 1955 when Holloway and Reaves (a firm) redesigned it on a much less grand neoclassical scale and centralized the entrance on axis. This was less grand than what was proposed by Allen Maxwell, who wanted something on the grand scale of the new alumni bldg [completed last year] (but much better than the design they built). It's kinda sad that they removed it, but that was the 'renovation thinking' in 1955. I would love to see that original building on main campus.

"Second Empire" is also the name of the fancy restaurant downtown. It's named because that's the era that the building reflects. Early 20th century architecture.

And that kids, is your NCSU architecture lesson for the day. kkthx
