is it better to have a few large capacitors or a bank of tiny ones? the aplication for a high power amplifier running on dc 2/19/2007 12:21:41 AM |

I think you need to be more specific on your circuit and application. 2/19/2007 1:20:21 AM |

ESR is the most important value for your application. Typically, you lower this by having more capacitors in parallel than one big one, but there are limitations to this.
In short, 4 250mF capacitors of same design as 1 big 1F cap (ie, same ESR for each single capacitor) will perform better in regards to delivering power faster.
But this is generally just bandaiding anyway. If the amp is built properly, it will deliver the power it says it can, no external caps needed. 2/19/2007 8:56:27 AM |

use a couple 100-200 kilofarad capacitors in series 2/19/2007 7:26:28 PM |

shit man, you're crazy.
that only works with Flux Capacitors. As if he'd ever be able to generate the 1.21 Jiggawatts, anyhow.

i menat more in terms of inside the amp. that's what i was thinking ab the esr being lower . i was just going over some pics of amplifier internals. i just noticed amps of simular rated power had either a couple large capitors or banks of smaller ones and kinda wondered which design would be better. i noticed more of the higher dollar amps used the smaller caps
