I had the computer shut down for a couple of days while I was out of town and haven’t had a problem with anything before.
The first time it I powered it up it seemed like it is about to initiate the boot sequence and everything, but instead all that happened is the CPU fan started accelerating and didn’t stop. The only way to power it down was to unplug it.
I tried it once more and everything booted fine, but it froze after about two minutes of use.
In the subsequent three tries to turn it on all I’ve gotten is the no boot with the fan spinning up to max speed.
Any ideas on where to start looking for the problem (or any other info that might be helpful in figuring it out)? Mobo? Fan? Processor? Power supply? OS?
I’m pretty worthless when it comes to hardware problems. Thanks in advance.

try disconnecting the fan to see if it will boot.
obviously you wont want to let it run long, if it does. 2/19/2007 7:17:43 PM |

yeah it's a dell dimension 8400 and it's thowing a amber power led and no diagnostic lights - general consensus from what i can find is it's the mobo, looks like i can get a replacement for $50 or so 2/20/2007 7:43:45 PM |
