If you haven't seen it and you're into this sort of thing (wizards and so on), I think you'll like it. It is a well-written show that has interesting storylines and likeable characters.
PS: I looked for another thread about this show, but I couldn't find one. 2/21/2007 12:41:40 AM |

Quote : | "The Dresden Files is a TV series based on the novels by Jim Butcher. It premiered on January 21, 2007, at 9:00 PM EST on the Sci-Fi channel in the United States and on Space: The Imagination Station in Canada. It has also been picked up by Sky One in the UK and began airing on February 14, 2007." |
Quote : | "In 2005, the Sci-Fi Channel announced that it had optioned The Dresden Files as a two-hour movie and backdoor pilot. Nicolas Cage executive produces alongside Hans Beimler, Robert Hewitt Wolfe, Norm Golightly, and Morgan Gendel. It is produced by Lionsgate Television in association with Cage's Saturn Films. Production began during the fall of 2005. Originally, a summer 2006 release was anticipated, but on May 23, 2006, a January 2007 airdate and 11 episode pick-up was announced on JBAnnounce, the official Jim Butcher announcement list. It was confirmed the next day by Sci-Fi.
The pilot movie was made from a screenplay by television writers Hans Beimler and Robert Hewitt Wolfe, and based on Butcher's novel Storm Front. David Carson directed and shooting took place in Toronto. It was announced in November 2005 that Paul Blackthorne had been cast in the lead role. The two-hour pilot was originally intended to serve as the premiere, but certain last- minute developmental and casting changes delayed its completion. Episode three (in production order) was aired in its place. Along with the re-shooting of several scenes, the two-hour pilot has been cut to an hour and will now be the eighth episode to air. The full version will most likely be shown later but it will not follow the show's continuity." |
Quote : | "Harry Dresden (Paul Blackthorne) - The main character of the series, Harry is a reluctant hero, a professional wizard who often helps the police with cases involving 'unusual' circumstances and others who seek his help. Harry's mother, a powerful wizard, died when he was young. He was raised by his father, a stage magician. Not much else about his upbringing is known except when he was about 10 his powers began to emerge and his uncle Justin wanted to take him and teach him about his powers. Harry's father felt it was the best for Harry to remain with him. Bob also refers to Harry 'self-defensing' his uncle to death, referring to the council's decision that Harry's slaughter of his uncle was determined to be an act of self-defense.
Lt. Connie Murphy (Valerie Cruz) - The Chicago policewoman who often seeks out Harry's help with cases that are hard to solve and may be supernaturally related. She is dedicated and takes her job seriously, even going as far as seeking out the only wizard in the phonebook to help with cases. Lt. Murphy is a tough, no-nonsense woman who is divorced and has a daughter who she says spends a lot of time with her father because of the long hours she has to work.
Bob (Terrence Mann) - The old spirit who is owned by Dresden. He was once owned by Dresden's uncle, Justin Morringway before Dresden 'self-defensed' him to death. He advises Dresden on both personal and magical matters. Bob is an invaluable source of knowledge which Dresden taps to solve supernatural crimes. In the pilot episode Bob is seen designing 'the Doom Box,' which is a supernatural jack-in-the-box that contains and amplifies energy. Dresden eventually uses 'the Doom Box' that Bob makes for him to kill a skinwalker. It also seems—from a conversation in the beginning of the pilot episode between Harry and him—that he wrote a grimoire while he was still alive that 'contained some nasty stuff in it.' Dresden burned the copy of Bob's grimoire that his uncle Justin Morringway had in his possession.
Morgan (Conrad Coates) - Morgan is the lead enforcer for the High Council, the governing body of the wizard community, assigned to the Chicago area. He is a stickler for the rules, powerful, and will often confront Harry because of their differing ideals and personalities.

^ Awesome! I was telling the truth, wasn't I? It's a damn good show.
The characters seem to have already found their voices, and they interact comfortably with one another in a way that it usually takes most TV shows a few seasons to develop--and the theme song is catchy, too. 3/9/2007 12:18:42 AM |

I'll agree that it's entertaining. I kind of wish Dresden did more magicky stuff tho. He mostly does small things, and alot of it is real detective work instead of flashy magic. 3/13/2007 2:23:27 PM |

^^^ Hey, miska. You have good taste!
^^ But it'll rot your insides! Maybe a one-time Fort Knox in-and-out?
^ I agree--more and better magic. But it is cool that his wand is a drum stick and his wizard's staff is a hockey stick!
PS: Am I the only one who thinks the theme is cool? It's funky--but too short.

^ Yeah, but did anybody notice that the vibe changed a little on the latest show? There was no Bob ; Harry's loft/warehouse/office didn't look the same; and the lighting was different--it was brighter looking (I prefer it to be darker).
I may be sweating the small stuff, but it bothered me. Am I the only one who noticed?
PS: Harry should (1) have more powers, and (2) he should be on the High Council.
PPS: Found the reason for the weirdness: I think tonight's show was originally supposed to be the pilot.

This last episode actually had more magic, so w00t It would make alot of sense if it was the pilot--would explain the council's hostility...they seemed a little more intense than usual. But what about the reporter girl?
And Storm Front, the name of the episode, looks to be the first Dresden book...

Great episode this week. This show has become destination television for me.
This show is way better than (1) a Sci-Fi Channel show should be and (2) such a new show should be. I mean, I've seen successful TV shows that didn't have the tight stories, good acting, and chemistry among the characters such as The Dresden Files has for three to five seasons. 4/3/2007 1:11:17 AM |
