I'm building hardware drivers for use on Windows Platforms.
I don't give a damn about getting Windows Certification, so of course the warning pop-up comes up on driver installation about "Windows has not certified this driver, blah blah blah..."
now, this isnt a big deal for 98/XP/2000 because you just click "Continue Anyhow" and go on your merry way.
But what about Vista? Will these XP drivers work on Vista, and will Vista force all drivers to be certified?
I havent been really paying attention to Vista at all, because I'm more interested in porting our existing Windows stuff to Linux. I guess I could look this up, but I'd rather not. 2/21/2007 6:04:18 PM |

^ Because there's a fine art to BS. You need to at least APPEAR that you've done your research before you ask a question regarding it. To answer your question, Vista does not force all drivers to be certified and will give you a pop-up indicating not certified. XP drivers may or may not work, depending on the individual item.
And um, if you (or your workplace) haven't migrated to Vista, and don't have a significant reason to do so, don't. XP still has 2 (or is it 4?) years of support left in it. 2/21/2007 10:23:45 PM |

thats great advice, and what I would probably give anyone else. and we have no plans to migrate to vista anytime soon.
however, some of our customers may do so, sooner or later, and so i was wondering if vista was going to require certifiication of its drivers. Id heard conflicting reports.

yeah, i guess I should know that as much as anyone. I used to be a freelance bovinoscatologist.
but you know, if everyone RTFM'd before posting, there'd be nothing to post.

I have found this, i'm not sure what the status on non WHQL signed drivers are for the x86 version are:
Quote : | "Additionally, Windows Vista x64 versions require that all drivers be digitally signed by the developer. If you've ever installed a driver in Windows XP, you'll likely be familiar with the unsigned driver dialog, which offers a "Continue Anyway" option when a setup application attempts to load an unsigned driver. In the x64 versions of Windows Vista, this will not be possible." |

64bit vista requires certs for drivers 32bit vista requires certs for drivers installed by a normal user. An administrator can install unsigned drivers. 2/22/2007 9:47:18 AM |
