Did your grades suck? Not been looking all that well?

https://my.cednc.org/cedext/censsacustlkup.query_page

Lots of small companies that may or may not be hiring. Search thru the list, go to their website, if it interest you, find the job/careers link and just send your resume to the hr e-mail link. In your cover letter explain what kind of position you are looking for. There are some risks working at smaller / start-up companies. The one I worked at before where I am now more or less ran out of money and owes me about 10k. But, even so, the experience I got there did help me get the job I have now where I'm making in excess of 50k (Which, considering my GPA was below 2.5, I'm quite happy)

Word of advice, if they miss a paycheck, but tell you there "this close" to another couple million in funding, start looking right away. Even if you are employee #15 and are managing a team in India and have so much company stock that once it gets bought out you'll be a millionaire by age 25. Its SO easy to believe because you want to believe. That and the CEO was a great liar.

When I was laid off in October, it took 5-6 weeks to find a new job. However, I did have a year experience then. Don't rule out temp agencies. Most positions are actually temp to hire. Or are temp to hire if you talk to the right people at least.

Also, have your resume on all the big search boards. Monster, Hotjobs, Dice, etc. The job I have now, I didn't even apply for. HR manager found me while searching Monster and gave me a call. Five days later I accepted their offer.

How hard were you looking for a job? I just graduated in December in CSC and received six job offers. I found these interviews/offers through ePack, aftercollege.com, the CSC career fairs, and Craigslist. Also, try manpower. I worked at GSK as an intern through them. Don't forget about the CSC career services, they were a great help. Good luck on finding a job.

Well I graduated in materials engineering last May and I still haven't gotten a job. I haven't even been looking since then, I've been looking since at least October of '05. I can't even get companies to at least tell me to piss off and never apply to them again, they just act like I never even applied.

My major GPA was slightly below a 3, but my overall GPA was ~3.3 or so, so I don't think my GPA is an issue. I think it's because I didn't look for any internships, because every goddamn job description I look at asks for a minimum of 3 years of experience. At first I was shaking my head and thinking "how the fuck am I suppose to have any years of experience for you when I'm just starting out?" But I guess that it's my responsibility, not theirs.

So I'm back in school again, going for a Masters in CSC. But I'm not gonna worry about trying to graduate "on time" or anything like that; the degree will take as long as it needs to. This time I will be looking for internships. And actually, if a company wants to go ahead and make me an offer, I'll leave school right now.

My overall point? I feel your pain. But I think you made the same mistake I did; you assumed that people would just hand a job to you on a silver platter just because you had a science/engineering degree. From what was described to me, I thought people would be sucking my cock to come work for them when I graduated, when it's really been the exact opposite. I practically have to beg just to get the interview, and more often than not their minds are already made up after the first question.

I don't really have any advice for you that hasn't already been said, except that if you absolutely cannot get a job, you might want to consider military service. I know I did before I ultimately decided to go back to school. But the only reason I can even afford to come back is because my parents are helping me. If you've got absolutely no support and you can't hold out much longer for a job, then at least think about joining the Air Force or Navy.

Take your damn high school off your resume. Unless you went to some world renowned prep school all an employer is going to do is laugh at that shit..

Second, did you do anything notable at any of your jobs that can relate some sort of ability to accomplish anything?

Quote :

Frankly, I wouldn't put it in there if it's below 3.5. Most good entry-level jobs will have loads of kids with 3.7s-4.0s applying. Seeing a 3.06 isn't going to be remarkable in the least

put information on core classes and experience from that, such as your senior design project, software engineering etc. go into more detail on your job at ibm...that's a big company, so people want to see that.

Yeah if I were you, I'd title your job with IBM as "IBM." Employers aren't going to necessarily read the whole thing, the most they might do is scan through the titles. If they find something interesting they'll read more into it. So title your education and experience in ways that will make them stand out.

And do remove your high school education. Odds are that nothing you did in high school has any relevance to the position you're applying for, so there's no point in even including it.

as an example, here's one of my core courses from my resume:

Software Engineering Course Project - Fall 2004.
- Developed a bug tracking Eclipse plug-in.
- Completed weekly Risk Assessment Forms.
- Architected project by creating UML class diagrams.

If someone reads that, they will see lots of keywords that can be used as talking points in the interview.

i had shit for experience too, but i really hit up my graduation project on the resume. it is just as large, if not larger, than anything else because it is the most relevant. i mean, you are likely doing iterative development, prof. presentation, design, etc.

that said, i also had a hard time getting a job after college despite my decent grades (i just didnt have any internships and that sux...my bad). i did a 1 year grad program and got all kinds of callbacks and offers. pay bump too from what i was asking for.

that wasn't the point i was making

how many of the successful people on tww used it to get where they are - it is a great place to ask for help on certain subjects but to just basically say it's been 6 months and i can't get a real job with my degree means you are definitely not doing something right - especially with the way the market for CSC grads is right now

Change that to area if your planning to keep an objective...but i aggree with the others that it is not needed.

Also you need to be more consistent with how you place your dates and formatining of your work experience. It would be more effective if they were listed like this

CSC 116 Teaching Assistant- 1/2002 - 5/2002
North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina
-Teaching JAVA Programming Lab
-Grading Projects and Tests

the career center on campus can help you even after graduation

call, make an appointment and go in for resume help & ask for them to do a mock interview with you

the career center is a fantastic resource & is VASTLY underused by students for reasons i dont understand

i had 4 internships in college and 2 of them i found on epack without 'knowing' anyone

also you can still attend the career fairs on campus

i work for caterpillar and they recruit at nc state and post all the positions on epack but you have to go to these resources!!!

tons of companies use career fairs & job posting sites through the university to find people to hire-- the companies aren't doing that for nothing!!

Yeah, that really annoys me sometimes too. About the resume:

-Some people like the objective, some think it's useless. Yours could stand to be more specific, or at least tailored to whatever position you're applying for. And I hope you don't have "area" mispelled on your real resume; that's a really bad first impression.
-Obviously, nobody's going to be impressed when the first thing they read under Experience is "grocery stocker." Not much you can do about it, but see if you can find internships, volunteer work, summer programs, or grad school that can give you experience.
-You could put Education before Experience since your degree is probably the most impressive thing you have now. I'm not sure if just "Bachelor's Degree" is the proper term. (Is CSC an Engineering, btw?) You can list relevant courses here, but move the programming experience to skills. And the others are right, you left high school behind a long, long time ago. It means nothing.
-Skills: Windows? Typing? Those aren't special. And the MS Office line needs help. There's no commas and you left out Word.

Did you college (I don't know what CSC is under) not offer assistance in these really basic things such as resume and review and job networking/placement assistance (even for recent grads)?

Also, were you not required to take ENG 332 - that should have nipped your resume problems right in the bud...

This is a pretty generic resume. It doesn't really tell them how you could help their company IMO.

- Make absolutely sure there are no spelling, grammatical, or punctuation errors in your resume. Most companies will throw it away the minute they see one.

- Be specific on experience. Tell exactly what you did, learned, and had experience with that would make you an asset to whatever company you are sending a resume to. Be specific. Use bullets to list valuable experience you gained (And NO PERIOD at the end of the sentence after a bullet).

- Elaborate on your objective... sounds like you're begging someone to hire you. While interviewing and on your resume... don't think of it as "Hey, give me a job" but more like "Here's how I can help you". Sure, you're seeking a job, but you've got to let them know how you can help their company. They're doing you a favor... not vice-versa. I'm no pro, and I graduated in CE with less than a 3.0 (And kept my GPA on my resume) and was hired 2 months after graduating.

My objective was as follows: "Seeking a full-time civil engineering position where I can use my teamwork, analytical, and problem-solving skills to contribute to an organization’s engineering team. "

That's not great, but at least it's not "Hey, please please give me a job" or "Hey I just graduated, hire me". Let them know you're willing to work hard to help their company... not just that you want a paycheck.

Like someone said, I'd also put Education #1 on there. I've also heard don't put any 'job experience' on your resume that anyone without your degree could do (i.e. grocery store). Do what pertains to your experiences with your major. Also, I'd call the 'Bachelor's Degree' and 'Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science' (Or at least I think that's right..you should know, not me). Instead of 'Three Dean's list' - Put the dates. 'Dean's List: Fall 02', Spring 03', etc'

The best advice I've got is that you need to let a company know a) how you could be an asset to them and b) Why they'd be dumb not to hire you. Don't be cocky.... don't lie on your resume, but glorify the shit out of everyday tasks you did as a TA and at IBM. Be specific with experience and how it pertained to what that company would ask you to do if you were employed there
