He turned a year old this month and is a little Papillon. He's been house trained but I've also been told Papillon's are harder to train than other breeds. For some reason every few months or so he decides to go to the bathroom in his kennel or inside. Nothing has changed with his potty breaks, I bring him out everyday around the same time and wait out there for him to go. These past two days I've taken him out for his morning potty and he poops immediately then he farts around for 15 minutes, chasing flies, sniffing the air, wandering around. I limit the area he can cover and ignore him, trying to make things boring so he realizes he has to go. After waiting for 20 minutes I bring him in and not five minutes later he pees on the floor, right in front of me. I make a loud noise to startle him and rush him outside where he doesn't do shit for another 20 minutes!!!!!!!!!
Then he doesn't go until the next potty break, why is he doing this?!?! He doesn't lift his leg or mark, he squats and piddles and it's annoying. I'm gonna start planting my ass outside in the morning until he goes potty but why does he go through these cycles? He's a year old and knows to go outside. it's very frustrating. 2/27/2007 11:02:13 AM |

obvious first question: has he been checked by the vet? sometimes these problems are the result of UTIs. 2/27/2007 11:06:02 AM |

I think he is retarded. It's like go outside and get rewarded, go inside get yelled at. DEE DEE DEEEEE
It figures I had to pick the special one of the bunch.

all the more reason to suspect a vet-fixable problem. if it happens all of a sudden and nothing about his environment has changed, take him to the vet.
and just like people, all dogs are different.

^ I wouldn't discount what she says, we kinda know what we're talking about. besides, wouldn't you rather go and get her checked out in CASE there was something wrong? 2/27/2007 11:50:58 AM |

I was agreeing. It's a possibility there's something wrong with him.

if male dogs arent around other male dogs, dont they eventually do the squatting thing too though? 2/27/2007 4:49:03 PM |

He's done the squaating thing all his life. He was beginning to mark when I took him to the vet to get neutered. I mean he marked the damn podium at the freaking vet. Since then no marking and happy Kern!
This pottying inside thing reeks. He comes in gets all excited then is like "Holy crap I forgot to pee!" and squats. Grrr. 2/27/2007 4:50:24 PM |

Treat him like a puppy again. If he doesn't do shit for 15 minutes, put him back in his kennel for another 15-20 minutes, then take him out again.
If he shits/pees in his kennel, your crate is too small. He should only have enough room to take a step forward and back and turn around comfortably.
Or he could just be an asshole. My dog occasionally poops infront of me if she thinks i'm not paying her enough attention. 2/28/2007 1:50:11 PM |

^ You mean his crate is too big - dogs try not to use the bathroom where they sleep - if the kennel is larger than necessary, he's got enough room to pee/poo in one corner and still be able to sleep comfortably on the other side. 3/1/2007 8:57:52 AM |

do you let him out or do you walk him?
That could be a huge difference. 3/1/2007 10:50:29 AM |

I have a kennel just big enough for him to turn around in, I was gonna get a larger one for when he is officially house trained but these random moments of him pooping in the kennel is delaying that.
I walk him since we're in an apt. I also bring him to work with me some days, I work at a boarding kennel, and I'll throw him in a potty yard and I've noticed that he goes quickly then. Maybe it's because he has free reign and can smell whereever he wants quickly. I don't know but it's annoying.
He hasn't peed or pooped in his kennel/inside the last two days, maybe he's on the downswing again though I'm not holding my breath that in a month he won't do it again. 3/1/2007 11:01:48 AM |

maybe you shouldn't let him do whatever he wants for 15 minutes. he should know that when you take him out that it is to go to the bathroom. only give him 5 minutes, and if the doesnt go then put him back in his crate, wait a while and then take him out again. 3/1/2007 1:24:50 PM |

sometimes i go outside and poop, and i come back inside and feel the urge to pee on the carpet.
so it's not all that weird. 3/3/2007 11:54:04 AM |
