http://www.petitiononline.com/no24orce/petition.html
Story: 2 married Saudi couples have been forceably divorced because relatives of those couples asked for it because of tribal reasons.
Couple 1: Man and woman get married with approval of bride's father. He gets old and dies. Power of attorney and guardianship passes on to his sons, who are the bride's half brothers. They never liked him, so they bring case to court, and court divorces couple. Couple has 2 children. Bride refuses to go home to her half brothers. So, she stays in jail (8 months now). Infant son with her in jail. (Ex-)husband quits job to come to stay in city where she is in jail. ~5 year old daughter with him. Daughter visits mother once a week for 1 hours. Husband can't visit wife because officially they have been divirced. He is also not allowed to call on phone.
Couple 2: Father abuses daughter and won't let her get married because she brings in a good salary as a doctor and father takes most of it. She elopes with a guy to Bahrain, gets married, and comes back (dumb move). Father takes case to court, court divorces couple, and sentences both to be lashed. Husband in jail. Wife under control of father.

aw man, are you for reel?
do you think the tribal judges or the saudi courts are going to give two shits about someone's petition on Teh Intarweb? 2/27/2007 7:36:29 PM |
0EPII1 All American 42541 Posts user info edit post |
for real, no.
but, it depends.
if there are 100,000 signatures on it, maybe.
and anyway, this petition is going to the king, and he is the most progressive king in the history of the country.
so maybe some good can come out of it.
remember, it takes drops, to make a bucket! 2/27/2007 7:38:39 PM |

^^ stfu you ignorant hateful bastard.
if you want to slam islam, slam it on things which it is slammable on.
this is not part of islam.
and that's the main reason even most saudis are shocked and against this, because the judges' ruling completely goes against islam.
^ as for you, you are always reasonable and pro-rights. i don't know why you are acting like this now. take what you said to gandhi... see what he says.

yes and if they're good for the country, yes. I'd rather have 1 good man leading a country then 1000 corrupt, over paid senators destorying it. Not saying all dictators are good but there can be one rose among the thorns.2/28/2007 8:18:39 AM |

Not signed. You either live in a place that cares about individual rights or you don't. If you don't, that's the fundamental problem that needs to be addressed. I'm not going to pretend that the rule of kings or religions is legitimate or beg them to make their policies slightly less bad. 2/28/2007 10:16:14 AM |

maybe if we get enough signatures on an online petition for insurgents in iraq to quit blowing shit up it will make a difference too...or not

Really, reading this thread has shown me how apathetic some human beings are. It is sad.

So the cases I have mentioned in the country... are they good for the country?

Yeah as if it is under people's control where they are born, where they live, and if they can change the policies of their leaders or their country. This is not the US or Europe. The majority of the world is poor and oppressed and powerless.

I signed it, knowing that nothing positive is going to change in that country until someone introduces all of the poor people and foreign workers to Marx and the royal family gets the ol' "czar Nicholas." But then we'll just be mad because the commies won't give us oil and we'll bomb it and install a decadent puppet regime...wow, maybe positive change is out of the cards altogether.
I do hope the king does something, though. 2/28/2007 1:27:14 PM |

the United States and Saudi Arabia have always had (in recent memory at least) and interesting relationship...on the surface, we are allies...we do lots of business (mostly oil)...and then theres that little Usama bin Ladin thing and all the funding to terrorism from SA

Osama has no ties with his Saudi families. He's excommunicated.

because you are a fucking idiot if you think Egypt funds terrorists. Egypt has always been on the front lines on the war on terrorists way before the united states knew what a terrorist was. Just because one or two terrorists had a Egyptian passport doesn't mean the whole country is behind them. Thats like saying the United States sponsors terrorism because the unibomber was american

This is pointless. Why don't we send a petition to Osama Bin Laden telling him to stop being a terrorist? I'm sure if 100,000 people sign, he'll lighten up a bit.
