Is anyone running a "copy" of Vista on their computer?
If so, how is this working for you? Did you just get it from a torrent? How is it with the Microsoft genuine protection?
This is for research purposes only btw. 2/28/2007 7:42:05 PM |

IBTL (because there are tons of Vista threads...not so much because of pirating software. but that too) 2/28/2007 7:46:17 PM |

my Vista i dual boot with i downloaded from a torrent site. it was a MSDN Vista torrent because at the time, the retail versions hadn't been released yet. anyway, i installed Vista Ultimate without a serial key because, well you can.
as for the genuine protection, that's a nasty bugger that many hackers/crackers are working to figure out. the trick that people have used is to exploit the trial timer to basically allow a 30 day trial forever. in this trial period, Vista is considered genuine on Microsoft's site. 2/28/2007 8:54:11 PM |

Buy it, there's not really any way around the activation this time around.
And actually I LOVE that they finally allow you a 30 day no-key usage. Makes life a lot easier for system integrators and hardware reviewers/testers. 2/28/2007 10:32:04 PM |

^^ that is 1 version of the timer trick. there are a couple different flavors of it, 1 being an unlimited time "30 day trial". however, MS released an update to their genuine protection thing today to counter all the timer tricks. dont know if it worked or not. 2/28/2007 10:36:22 PM |

^You couldnt get ANYTHING as far as updates or MS downloads without activating, which is a real pain in the ass. 3/1/2007 4:58:00 AM |

^Actually you could. If you go to the official windows update site you will be blocked until you activate. To get around that one I just set my automatic updates in the security center to auto - for me Windows always started to automatically download all the updates within 5 minutes or so (as noted by the yellow shield in the task bar). Once they are all downloaded you are free to install them.
I'm not sure why they block you on the official site if they are just going to allow you to update anyway. 3/1/2007 7:14:02 AM |

Vista activation cracked by brute force It is a simple brute force attack, dumb as a rock that just tries keys. If it gets one, you manually have to check it and try activation. Is is ugly, takes hours, is far from point and click, but it is said to work.

yea it could take a very long time. the chances of getting a valid key are very minimal. there have been reports of people getting them for all versions of Vista using the brute-force. 3/1/2007 7:50:09 PM |

if anyone is interested, the chinese have a found a way to modify the boot sector of the computer to trick the computer into thinking that an OEM Vista is installed. so activation is no problem now at all for pirated copies because using this trick will make the copy 100% genuine. 3/2/2007 12:16:32 PM |
