I didnt see another thread that was made for general fantasy discussion, and since I was looking to get some different perspectives on trades, player's value, etc. I figure I'd start it up myself
So use this for general discussion and advice.
I had a draft earlier today and was offered a pretty big trade- I would be giving up Ryan Howard, Adrian Beltre and John Patterson and would receive A-Rod, Nomar, and Matt Cain. My first reaction is to reject the trade, but I wanted to see if I'm missing something that would make this an even trade 3/3/2007 5:26:31 PM |

I wouldn't be opposed to the trade. You would get the best player in my opinion out of the deal (Arod) and I would rather have Cain than Patterson. But with what Howard did last year, I wouldn't blame you if you turned it down too. 3/3/2007 5:41:33 PM |

Here's my first team of the year (a 5x5 10-team leage) with 2 catchers, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, 5 OF, 2 Util and 9 pitcher slots (relief or starters) and 2 bench slots:
I had the 7th pick in a snake draft with which round I picked them on the right of their names: C Ramon Hernandez (12) C Gerald Laird (21) 1B Lance Berkman (3) 2B Chase Utley (1) 3B Troy Glaus (10) SS Felipe Lopez (11) OF Carlos Beltran (2) OF Ichiro Suzuki (4) OF Brad Hawpe (15) OF Willy Taveras (19) OF Craig Monroe (Free agent pickup) Util Paul Konerko (8) Util Richie Sexson (16) P Jake Peavy (5) P John Lackey (9) P Danny Haren (13) P Erik Bedard (14) P Chis Capuano (18) P Mark Buehrle (22) P Huston Street (6) P JJ Putz (7) P Jose Valverde (17) Bench Joe Crede (Free agent pickup) Bench Roger Clemens (20)
I think I have a good blend of power (Berkman, Glaus, Konerko, Beltran) and speed (Ichiro, Taveras, Lopez). But my strength may be my starting pitching. I think Haren and Bedard may have blowup seasons this year and if Roger Clemens comes back to play, I'm going to have a nasty lineup. I will probably trade one of my starters for a good outfielder since that's my weakest spot. I like to play 6 starters and 3 relievers. 3/4/2007 11:44:39 AM |

^^ I like that team...I don't think you necessarilly need to trade any of your pitching away
I haven't had my draft yet, but it's a 5x5 with 14 teams, I have the 10th pick, so here is what I'm shooting for (let me know if you see any glaring holes):
C Ivan Rodriguez C Gerald Laird 1B Mike Jacobs 2B Brian Roberts 3B Hank Blalock SS Felipe Lopez MI Chris Burke CI Chad Tracy OF Carlos Beltran OF Adam Dunn OF Corey Patterson OF Kenny Lofton OF Frank Catalanotto Util Brad Wilkerson (or really just whoever the best guy available is by the time I draft everyone else) SP Chris Carpenter SP Scott Kazmir SP Joe Blanton SP Kenny Rogers SP Zach Duke RP Tom Gordon RP Ryan Dempster RP Octavio Dotel RP Scot Shields P Chris Young
These predictions are all based on average draft position so far and jive with what picks I have. Obviously some stuff might go wrong and people get taken off the board before I want them too, but point is, that's what I'm shooting for 3/10/2007 7:28:47 PM |

Question with this trade... Should I accept Jason Bay for Jermaine Dye? (I have Dye). I'm thinking Bay is going to have a great year since he finally has protection, but I dont know 3/15/2007 9:37:11 AM |

I would take the trade in a second...Bay should produce and I don't think Dye is going to have nearly the kind of year he had last year 3/15/2007 10:11:53 AM |

In one of my public leagues, I guy just offered me (and I accepted) Jose Reyes and Papelbon for Ryan Howard and Gagne. I was already struggling for SBs and my SS was going to be Bill Hall. I've also got Hafner and Sheffield to play 1B, assuming Hafner is eligible.
In terms of power I am stacked so losing the 30 more HRs that Howard provides over Reyes does not concern me. RBI wise I should be fine too. What do you guys think? I think I made out well on this trade. 3/26/2007 11:56:09 AM |
PackMan03 All American 4594 Posts user info edit post |
i think it's a fair trade although if Papelbon is the same closer as last year, you may end up losing on this trade. all in all, seems like you did good with the speed you got, which you needed. 3/26/2007 12:53:46 PM |
rflong All American 11472 Posts user info edit post |
^ I don't know what you mean. Papelbon was amazing until he got hurt. Gagne may or may not be the guy he once was, but both closers in the deal are injury risks, but I think Papelbon is less of a risk. Plus Papelbon should have more save opps than Gagne too...

Good trade, assuming Papelbon stays healthy. Not sure how well Gagne's going to do in the AL his first year, so it could end up looking at Reyes for Howard. To which, I think you did good. Reyes should hit more for a better average and more steals, Howard will be killing the ball.
Do you have another mid-to-good closer as backup? 3/26/2007 1:44:42 PM |

^ Yeah I have Chris Ray and I also picked up Jose Valverde as a third option. Valverde is so inconsistent, but he could be a steal. Our league is deep and even good setup guys like Linebrink, Otsuska (sp?), and Mike Gonzalez are taken. 3/26/2007 1:49:23 PM |

If you're in a 5x5 league I think Reyes is definitely better to have than Howard, especially if you've got decent 1B options like you do 3/26/2007 3:34:38 PM |

Here is a free tip.
Drop that crappy utility player that you picked up because he plays every infield position. You know who I'm talking about. The Ty Wigginton type.
Go to the free agent pitching list and pick up Oliver Perez even if you are fine with pitching. I'm telling you right now he is going to be back close to his 2004 form. Look up his stats for that year and tell me you could find a better free agent starter. He is a completely different pitcher under Rick Peterson than he was the last 2 seasons in the hellhole that is Pittsburgh. 3/26/2007 3:46:34 PM |
rflong All American 11472 Posts user info edit post |
^^^ Not bad, but I'd expect a better lineup in a 10 team league. You have alot of questionable guys like Posada, Hunter, Patterson, Beltre, Crisp, and Podsednik that you cannot be sure of what you are going to get from them. Barfield should be a good sleeper. Check to see if guys like Alex Gordon or Howie Kendrick are available and pick them up in place of Beltre. I would not expect much out of Podsednik. See if Dave Roberts is available - he's a better cheap SB option.
As for pitching, you've got some solid SPs in terms of fantasy production. Harang, Lackey, Zito, Lowe all are good WHIP, ERA guys. Ray and Cordero give you two solid closers. I would drop Prior and look for a guy like David Bush, Matt Garza, Scott Olsen, etc. It sounds like Prior will be on the DL again and each of the young guys I listed should be a #2 or #3 on their rotation and are flying under the radar in fantasy drafts.
[Edited on March 26, 2007 at 3:51 PM. Reason : ^ Very good suggestion as well on Oliver Perez]
[Edited on March 26, 2007 at 3:52 PM. Reason : Also in general, look for high OPS guys for hitters and low WHIP guys for pitchers- basic strategy] 3/26/2007 3:50:23 PM |

Jose Reyes is worth more then Howard because he provides stats in numerous categories and plays a more valuable position. It is also unlikely that Howard produces as well as he did last year, though I think he will still hit 40 hrs.
To Panthro I would try to find someone better the Mark Prior. He lost his fastball, sitting around 87 instead of 95 like he used to and will not be effective because of it. Your offense seems well balanced with power, speed, and average.
And Drod I hope you took the deal because Matt Cain is going to be great this year and Howard/Beltre and Nomar/Arod is pretty much a wash. Patterson also plays for Washington which means he isn't going to win as many games as he should. 3/26/2007 3:57:12 PM |

I'm very biased in this but don't be surprised for Reyes to hit 25-30 HRs this year and Howard to fall back a bit to around 45-48. The power differential won't be as great as some might think..
^ I agree about Cain. Zito gets the $$$$ but Cain will be that teams ace.

I agree with dropping Prior. Even if he doesn't get hurt again I think he's gonna get rocked. I'd look on the FA list for some 3rd year starters...Chris Young is probably gone, but you might be able to grab someone like Dave Bush, Joe Blanton, Jeff Francis, or Zach Duke. 3/26/2007 4:21:56 PM |

^ Good moves if you read what fantasy writers are saying. Roberts will be an upgrade over Podsednik, but you don't necessarily need more speed though. You could even consider dropping Podsednik/Roberts and seeing if a guy like Cain or some of the other young pitchers mentioned are available. I didn't completely realize how much speed you have (Furcal, Soriano, Hunter, Cano, Patterson, Crisp, Barfield). 3/26/2007 4:32:34 PM |

Depends on the league. I picked A-Rod over Reyes on a power-oriented league (HRs, RBIs, OPS) that didn't have speed categories (SB, 3B). But in a really in depth stat league I'd take Reyes.
I still think Jose will have a MVP type year based on what I've read about his development and what I've seen being a diehard Mets fan. Something like .325 25 90 with 70 SB.. 3/28/2007 11:07:51 AM |

I'll only go as far as to say that Perez is a mild sleeper; he was a flash in the pan. There is a reason he is still in the free agent pool. He wasn't good before 04 and he hasn't been good since 04. Furthermore, just yesterday he got the bottom knocked out - by the NATS of all teams. 5 2/3 IP, 9 H, 4 ER.

I hate Roto because people quit too early once they are behind in certain stats. With H2H, people can still make the playoffs even if they start the season off shitty.

It's pretty simple. The Pirates, in their infinite wisdom, messed with his mechanics and his fastball dipped down to the high 80's, touching 91 occasionally. Since getting to Rick Peterson his fastball sits at 93-95 and touches 97 again.
Basically there was a Baseball Prospectus article not too long ago this offseason that showed the motion he had when in '04 and before versus what he was in '05 and '06 and now what he has shown in spring training that lays it all out.
I actually have meetings all day now so I can't look for it, but I'll post it maybe tomorrow when I have time.. 3/28/2007 11:35:12 AM |

The thing is it can be so arbitrary due to bullpen issues or coaches wanting to give their players rest.
I.E. Dontrelle Willis is probably more likely to get a shutout than Santana because the Florida bullpen is shit, whereas the Minnesota coach might want to rest Santana and doesn't worry about his bullpen coughing up the lead

Shutouts is a horrible category to have. The fact that they are so rare is one thing, but allowing a category like that to cancel out another category sucks. Say for example you are winning in HRs, but for whatever reason you don't have any shutouts and are last in that cat, you've cancelled out your HR lead.
A category where you can get zero stats for a week and possibly a month is ridiculous. Might as well have pickoffs and ground rule doubles as cats too.
