i'm guessing that doesn't apply to all the unmanned border crossings. I know at some of them you are supposed to stop and fill out a little form with your name, etc and put it in a little box but no actual border guards are there. 3/11/2007 8:45:02 PM |

I just crossed the border in February...you definitely don't have to have a passport to drive across. As for the original question, I'm not sure...
FYI, this is what the State Department has to say:
Quote : | "ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: All persons entering Canada by air are required to present a valid U.S. Passport when entering or re-entering the United States. Land and sea travelers are also encouraged to have a valid U.S. passport. If they do not have a passport, they should be prepared to provide a government-issued photo ID (e.g. Driver's License) and proof of U.S. citizenship such as a U.S. birth or naturalization certificate. Quote : | "Since Jan. 23, the federal government has required a valid U.S. passport to enter the United States by air from Canada, Mexico and Bermuda.
Under a decision Feb. 22, children 15 or younger who are U.S. or Canadian citizens and have parental consent will be able to enter the United States with a certified copy of their birth certificate. And children 16 to 18 also will be allowed to cross with birth certificates if they are part of an adult-supervised school, religious, cultural or athletic group.
There will be no change to the new rules for those who fly. Everyone coming into the U.S. by plane, no matter their age, must show a passport under the rules that took effect Jan. 23.
As early as Jan. 1, 2008, a passport will be required for citizens entering the United States by land or sea, including ferries and commuter trains, from Canada, Mexico, Central and South Americas, the Caribbean and Bermuda." |

A passport is a worthwhile investment if you don't already have one. Make an appointment with a local post office and go do it one day. 3/12/2007 5:57:54 AM |

The Canadian people enjoy many local customs that an American might find "unusual". 3/12/2007 10:02:53 AM |
