Coliseum

Okay, heres the original story in WDT...

Quote :
"Barton hopes to close special era with one last win in 'The Dog House'

Paul Durham Assistant Sports Editor

I probably should have learned my lesson by now.

Once again, I found myself sitting on one end of Wilson Gym waiting for the clock to run out on the Barton College men's basketball team's season in the NCAA Division II East Regional tournament.

But just as they did on back-to-back nights last March as they claimed the East Regional crown, the Bulldogs defied probability again as they erased a 13-point deficit in the final five minutes to take an 86-85 win against West Virginia State.

Forgive me if I was too quick to jump off a ship that had no intention of sinking. It wasn't a matter of faith because I believe Bulldogs head coach Ron Lievense when he constantly praises the heart of his band of Bulldogs.

No, it was a matter of logistics. All the Yellow Jackets needed down the stretch, really, was a couple of baskets. There just didn't seem to be enough time.

To be sure, when Bulldogs senior Alejo Barovero missed two foul shots with WVSU up 81-70 at the 5:22 mark, it seemed to be the tell-tale omen.

Maybe I wasn't the only one who flirted with the notion that Barton's fabulous two-year run was about to end.

"I was sitting on the bench and a million things were going through my head," Bulldogs senior Mark Friscone told me after the game. "I started thinking about last year, and I started looking at the faces of Anthony Atkinson and Alejo and I knew that they were going to just stay in it."

After Atkinson and Barovero scored seven unanswered points to hack that lead down to 83-77 with 2:49 to play, I began to think like Friscone.

As the Yellow Jackets' margin continued to dwindle, the crowd began to roar. Seated prominently at courtside were two seniors on Barton's 2006 Elite Eight squad, Casey Moore and Courtney Coffer.

Then a familiar chant slowly took form throughout the old arena.

"All I could hear was 'We believe! We believe!' from the crowd," recalled Atkinson. "Then you look over at Courtney and Casey on the sideline and they're like, 'Come on! We believe!' Then you've got Coach (Lievense) over there on the sideline yelling the same thing,

"It was incredible to see that again but, at the same time, it was time to hit the panic button."

Atkinson and Barovero took the Bulldogs into overdrive, scoring the final nine points and making me feel sheepish yet again.

What is it about this team that enables it pull off amazing comeback after comeback in the pressure cooker of elimination basketball?

Is Wilson Gym a magical place along the lines of Boston Garden, Duke University's Cameron Indoor Stadium or the University of North Carolina's Carmichael Auditorium?

"These guys are special," Lievense insisted. "It has nothing to do with the building; it has to do with the young men who are out there competing their hearts out and the great support of a great sixth man (the crowd)."

The Barton coach touched on a point here. The Bulldogs thrive on the energy their fans bring. I can imagine what opposing players and coaches must think when they walk into the door and see those bleachers right on top of the action, full of rabid Barton fans.

"I think we have the best sixth man in all of Division II here. I think we've got great people who support us," Lievense contended. "When you've got great guys with big hearts and you've got people out there cheering for you the whole time, it's a great small college environment."

Win or lose, tonight will be the end of a truly special era for Bulldogs basketball. While Lievense has positioned the program to have quality seasons in the coming years, tonight is the Wilson finale for Atkinson, Barovero, Friscone and Bobby McNeil.

If you haven't bought your tickets yet, you probably should. The ticket office at Wilson Gym was open at 8:15 this morning and will be selling tickets — cash sales only — until tip-off at 7 p.m.

See you in "The Dog House."

and this is his response....

"Wade,

How can I ever forget Jimmy V and what he and the Wolfpack did in the 1983 NCAA Tournament? That was probably the highlight of my life as as sports fan. But as much as it was (and is) a legendary arena, Reynolds didn't have quite the aura to opposing teams as the ones I mentioned did.

Nevertheless, I'm beginning to think that none of those places can hold a candle to "The Dog House!"

Quite the aura?

Sounds like he never saw a game in Reynolds and had his ears buzzing afterwards.

well, he writes for the "po-dump times" and is entitled to his own opinion.

I would consider a diss to be more along the lines of something negative, like "Reynolds was a complete shit hole", or something like that.

This guy omitted us from a list we should have been included in, but who cares what this guy thinks anyway?

Riiiight

Considering half to three-quarters of the Cameron 'Crazies' chants are ripoffs of old Reynolds Rowdies chants.

Didn't Reynolds get the #1 venue on the ACC's 50th anniversary awards for most intimidating arena?

If you don't think it's as intimidating as Cameron...okay. To say Carmichael was more intimidating is the most utterly ridiculous comment I've ever seen

Reynolds was a powerhouse and will continue to be named as one of the most intimidating places to play. This guy must be a carolina graduate/fan/wal-mart apparel buyer.

he didn't.

don't you know that if you write for a newspaper anywhere in North Carolina, and you mention anything relating to Duke, UNC, Cameron Stadium, The Smith Center, Dean Smith, Ramsey, Coach K, Roy Williams, Durham, Chapel Hill, Michael Jordan, Christian Latner, Duke Chapel, Jerry Stackhouse, Mack Brown, Duke Campout, The Pit, The Well, Kenan Stadium, or Julies Peppers, you have to make a requisite reference to NC State, Raleigh, Philip Rivers, Julies Hodge, Reynolds Colosseum, The Bell Tower, The Brickyard, Jimmy V, Everett Case, David Thompson, 1983, 1974, Tommy Burleson, Mr. Wuf, or Harrelson Hall to make up for it.
