I was hoping to quickly re-enroll at State and finish my BS using my general AA that I've earned since joining the military. Unfortunately the college giving me my AA incorporated military experience and technical training from my medical job, and NC State is giving me a rough time about the transfer process.

Very disappointing

I got absolutely zero from NCSU for my military service. I figured I'd at least get credit for PE classes, but I guess NCSU wants your GI Bill dollars.

However, I was able to use some miltary schools to waive pre-requisites for classes I took at a community college. But it doesn't sound like it's working out for you.

I'm fairly certain that the university does not transfer in Associate Degrees. They transfer in specific courses that are said to be equivalent to NCSU courses. You will most likely not get anything from your military service but if you took courses from a college that are transferable, they should count.

Look up your college here:
http://www7.acs.ncsu.edu/uga/course.htm

and see what transfers.

If the college where you obtained you associate's degree is based in North Carolina--and especially if it is part of the NCCCS--there's a good chance of an articulation agreement between NC State and your college. If so, State should be honoring that agreement.

What branch were you in? If you were in the Army, like me, you should have a seperate Army/American Council on Education Registry Transcript (AARTS). But most colleges don't give much beyond physical education credits. And unfortunately--I know from past experience with them--State undergrad admissions LOVES to look at associate's degrees like they are something from outer space.

i think your problem is " military experience and technical training from my medical job" are not the same thing as college classes.

additionally, your AA degree from whatever college will never just simply transfer over, but classes that you've taken towards getting that AA might be able to be used instead of actually taking the class at NCSU. But only the classes that are needed for your particular major are going to count. So, be prepared to lose some [alot].

its not a matter of NCSU making it hard, its a matter of what courses you've taken in the past that can take the places of courses at NCSU.

i understand the frustration though, i took a bunch of classes while i was in the marines but only a few of them actually counted towards classes i needed for my major here at state.

Is it NCSU specifically that rejects that courses, or is the public NC universities in general?

I lost about a year of my AA when I transfered to NCSU. They only transfer those courses which they have to, they are not in the least bit flexible about certain courses being very similar. Probably thats a big part of why I found the intro. engineering classes here so boring, and the labs were a joke, my CC had better.

Why would you think that most military classes have the same level of instruction as a professor with a PhD?

This might be a case of bureaucracy hates everybody rather than ncsu hates military… either way best wishes in getting things straightened out!
