Is this possible? my grandfather willed me his truck and I'm curious what would need to be done. Most people say buy a new truck but i'm still curious what would be involved.

You will be able to buy one cheaper than you can convert it. That being said,

most people are right

depends. if you're just looking for something stock or close to it, you're much better off just selling it and buying a 4wd.

if you want something a little more radical with a d44/d60 solid axle, custom suspension, etc. it's not a big deal to start with a 2wd since all the ifs crap would be cut off a 4wd to do such a thing also.

put some big, aggressive tires on the back. you'd be surprised where you can go with a 2wd. I don't know about the 17" rims, but I used to always run 30 or 31's on 15" rims on the back and 235/75's on the front and had pretty good luck unless it was somewhere a truck didn't need to be anyway. My 2005 F-150 still has the original tires, so I don't know what I'll buy for the back when they wear out.

quite true. decent tires make a big difference. add a locker to the mix, and you can do some pretty amazing things with a 2wd.

keep what you got stock and buy a trailer and a beater 4x4. you can wail hell out of the 4x4 and still get home if you break something.
