McAfee used to be better than Norton but I personally wouldn't use either. There are several alternatives like AntiVir which is what I use. Anything is better than nothing at all.

uh, no. McAfee is actually one of the more resource-hogging and generally crappy protection software out there.

imho, Symantec has always been better than McAfee, not only is McAfee a resource hog but it replaces core windows files and totally screws up your system if/when it's removed... a complete PIA all around. norton is pretty bad too, but Symantec Corporate AV is probably one of the best. for home use i'd recommend kaspersky or active virus shield (free more basic version of kaspersky)... AVG is a good free one but scan speed is a bit slow, and AntiVir is good except for this REALLY annoying popup you get once a day when it updates it's virus def's.
