so i've read a couple of reviews saying that this phone lets you listen to the walkman with the cellular functions turned off. anyone have this phone and know how to do it? 3/25/2007 8:29:02 PM |

When you start up the phone, it should ask you whether or not you want to start in "Music only" mode. If you dont see that screen, go to Settings -> General -> Startup menu -> Show at startup.
BTW, the W810i kicks ass. 3/25/2007 8:40:39 PM |

On my w810, when i power the phone on, it asks me if i want phone mode or music only mode.
From teh owner's manual:
Start-up menu: When the start-up menu is activated, each time you turn on the phone, you can select listen to music only, with phone network transmitters turned off. This prevents disturbance of sensitive equipment, for example, in an airplane where calls and messages are prohibited. You cannot make calls, receive calls, or send messages, etc. You can only use the Walkman® player. If you have selected Music Only, some limited functions are still available such as the alarm, calendar and task reminders.
To activate the start-up menu } Settings and scroll to the General tab } Start-up Menu. Select Show.

thanks guys. so far this phone is great. i'm still getting used to the size. my old lg phone was a beast and had huge buttons (which was nice).
how's the reception around raleigh?
i am going to hawaii in 2 weeks so i will have to hide the phone well from stupid flight attendants. 3/25/2007 9:52:56 PM |

I've had no problems with reception in raleigh... love the phone. 3/25/2007 10:52:17 PM |

that phone will be solid in raleigh. If you're venturing towards no coverage area's, it's not going to hold out as long as some others, but it's solid. I've never had one flight attendant even look at me funny about a phone.. strange 3/25/2007 11:06:45 PM |

on a related note, on every sony ericsson phone i've ever had, i was able to activate silent mode by holding down the "c" button. Doesn't work on my W810i, and I can't find a shortcut anywhere (besides changing the profile).
What gives? 3/26/2007 8:18:20 AM |

On the w810, the "c" button will mute the microphone during a phone call. The silent mode shortcut button is the # key. See the little music notes with a line through it? 3/26/2007 8:52:46 AM |

why the fuck do you have your phone out in plain sight when they walk up and down the aisles like you can't fucking see them making their rounds? put that shit away and take your headphone bud out of the ear facing the aisle until they finish their checks. then put that shit back in and blast your music all you want once they're done. no bullshit air hostess have ever told me to take off my headphones. the only time they tell people is if they're actually TALKING ON THE FUCKING PHONE while they're making their rounds. 3/26/2007 2:16:34 PM |

Well cell phones DO cause interference (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06060/662669.stm). How much and if it would ever be an issue is the question. However, I've heard one of the main reasons they are still banned is not because of problems it could cause to the aircraft but because the interference they cause with cell phone towers on the ground (overload towers, something with the high elevation and each call hitting multiple towers).3/27/2007 10:43:57 AM |

no
they are banned because there are so fucking many that it would be impossible for the faa to approve them for use as well as police the use of ones that are not approved 3/27/2007 1:07:06 PM |

Gulf Air has allowed use of them for like a month now, the first airline to do it.
Rest will follow suit in due time. 3/28/2007 3:35:31 AM |

I was always told it only "caused interferrance" during takeoff/landing. Eh, no biggie to me 3/28/2007 6:47:42 AM |

i hope airlines never allow them, i dont want to have to listen to everyone talking on their phone while travelling 3/28/2007 8:03:29 AM |

Quote : | "what are you talking about?" |
why cell phones arent allowed to be used in flight
every thing that goes into an airplane has to be tested and approved
there are so many different makes and models of phones that it would be nearly impossible to test and approve them all for flight...and if some arent approved, policing passengers who use phones and checking them would be stupid, thats all flight attendants would end up doing
so the faa has a total ban because it is easier

not if they want to fly into the US
