They definitely shouldn't call them purity balls or include abstinence in the whole deal. That kinda goes back to like days when daughters couldn't have sex cause then their fathers couldn't marry them off for as much money.

But the idea of the ball itself is a good one. Kinda like Indian Princesses for older girls.

^ along the same line, kids who go though abstinence only sex-ed classes do wait longer to have sex. On average, a whopping 3 months longer than kids with normal sex-ed class, and as you said, they are much less likely to use protection because they don't know about it.

I will say, with the title, and the picture on mcfluffle's link, I thought it would be something much different than it was once I read it (like a chit chat thread). Either way, still strange.

I though puritans were opposed to both dancing and prideful dress. This whole ball idea doesn't seem to fit anywhere within the puritan ethic.

I don't see the creepiness of it per se, but I don't like the idea of a Purity Ball either since I'm against abstinence education...Maybe MTV will pick up on it though "My Super Sweet Purity Ball" heh

I agree...I wish my town had an Indian Princess club when I was growing up. My boss takes his daughter to those and it's one of his favorite things to do.

I find it intersting that we identify purity with not having sex. I mean, not all, but many cultures thoughout history have done that, but what is it in the human psyche that associates the very act that perpetuates human existance with wrong?

It seems like good parenting would make a lot more sense than some creepy shit like that.

No one said that. This is what you should have said:

I find it intersting that we identify purity with not having sex till marriage.

i think it's creepy for a father to give a 10 year-old a diamond ring and pledge to "war" for her virginity. It is materialistic, invasive and hints electra complex.

Fair enough, but then again, I think it was Paul that said it was good for a man not to know woman. In essence, marriage is a concession of the Bible, not a necessity as I recall. And, of course, the Catholic church has two sub-societies (monastic orders and the priesthood) who all deny themselves sex due to a prohibition on marriage. The Church also views sex as purely the act of procreation and not of any recreational value.

I have my theories on this, but I'm more interested in what other people think.

So these dads are basically ensuring that their daughters turn into blow job queens that are down with anal.
