punchmonk is 25 and is graduating in may. though she switched schools twice, once took a year off for medical leave and another year to get in-state tuition when we moved to PA. she's still bout to graduate summa cum laude

so, you see, age doesn't necessarily mean a thing. if you squandered your younger years, then yeah, you might be a failure, but doesn't have to mean that

if you're still (however slowly) accumulating credit hours, you're on the right path

not everyone finishes in 4 years...or even 5 or 6

try to replace whatever shame or guilt you naturally feel with the enjoyment of the college lifestyle cause in general its easier than working "in the real world"

Heh, I surely didn't graduate on time. Why take 15+ hours of classes when you can just take 12-14 I just tried to make my undergraduate time as enjoyable as possible and as little about academics as possible.

I personally get down when I realize I won't be out of graduate school till I'm 27.

i was 22 and i'll be 24 when i get my mba, but i didn't "socialize" as much as most because i just wanted to get it all behind me and start working.

don't sweat it man...23 is young and everyone is different. some people want to get in and out and don't enjoy as much of a social life as others, but to each his own. as SpiralStairs said...just make sure you GET the degree and it will pay off in a few years of working full time.

and as long as you spin it in you favor, taking more than four years will NEVER hurt you in an interview. just keep chugging along.

I graduated in a leisurely 8 years including a 4 year break in the middle to get residency and save money. On the bright side, after age 24 you get a lot more grants since your parents' income isn't factored in. No worries, just get it done before 30.

you've got your whole life to work, why not spend as much time as possible being as free from responsibility as you'll ever be in your entire life.

i mean

you can make honor roll with only a couple hours a day work in engineering, that leaves so much time for other things.

enjoy the sun, enjoy your friends, enjoy the nights.

you'll regret if you dont..

I would have killed to have an extra couple of years in college. Went to the Naval Academy where not only are you required to graduate in 4 years, the 15 hours I had my final semester seemed so light it was a joke. I usually pulled 18-21 hours a semester, with half of those classes having labs. I would have liked to have more time - took Russian for 2 years (got it for the first year, 2nd year was just passing so I could concentrate on all the other crap). We had to declare majors after our first semester freshman year, I bailed on mine (Ocean Engineering) because of a shitty Statics prof and went into PoliSci as it was pretty much my only option to switch majors and still graduate on time.

162 hours in 4 years = no fun

Enjoy your leisurely progress and study whatever you want. I went to grad school after my military commitment was up and had a "real" college experience getting my MBA...sure it was a forced 2-year program, but after the workload in undergrad, it seemed like a cakewalk.

When I started college, I expected to graduate at age 21. Instead, it took until I was 23. I felt like a failure, too, then I started working and realized that once you are out of college, it doesn't really matter to you when you graduated. My GF graduated at 26 after 4 different colleges, 4 different majors, and a couple of years off. No sweat.

i wouldnt worry too hard as long as you dont have a shitty job. ive got a lot more disposable income, a nicer place, nicer stuff, and a job that i enjoy for the most part (not to mention i generally dont have to take home work).

I graduated at 22, but I can't seem to get a job with my degree (and an engineering degree, no less ). Well actually, that's not entirely true; I did manage to find work as a lowly lab technician (only slightly more than $30K a year, not exactly the best pay for someone with an engineering degree to start off at), but I sucked so bad at it that they let me go just after two months. There's no way in hell I can count on them for a good recommendation, and without any prior experience or internships, nobody will even look at my resume. I'll send my resume off to a few places, and NONE of them will even write back saying that they at least got it. It's like I'm so pathetic that they can't even bother to take the time to say to my face that they don't want me. I have pretty much destroyed any chance I had left of getting an engineering-related job. If anybody in this thread is a failure, it's me.

So now I'm 23 and working on a comp-sci degree. I'm skipping the bachelor's and going straight for the masters, but I'm also on the lookout for internships and the like. And if somebody wants to make me an offer before I finish the masters, I'll quit school in a heart beat. But the way it looks, I probably won't be out of school again until I'm 27 or so. So don't feel bad about taking a little longer to graduate. Don't feel like a failure because you're not "graduating on time." And listen to the other people in this thread; enjoy the college life while you still can. Maybe if I had taken a little more time to enjoy being with my friends (and looked for a co-op, lol) instead of pissing away my time trying to graduate in four years, things would be a lot different for me right now. I think another thing that would have helped is that I should have never gone done my first degree, but that's another story for another day.

anyway, i don't regret taking the extra time at all. the good times i had instead of doing what i "should" have been doing were worth it. i worked alot my last two years also, so it wasn't all goofing off.
