as i see it, the two party system itself (dems and repubs) is one of the major reasons our gov has always had a certain negative stigma surrounding it.

it is not a generalization.
Look at congress. It is the republicans who say we can win the war and the democrats who say we cannot.
Some things CAN be generalized even though you don't like that. Stereotypes are, at times, valid.

So when the republicans are in favor of things like checking up on our phone conversations, defining marriage between a man and a woman, not teaching evolution because it's not in the Bible, and other such things this is because they have so much respect for the Constitution? 3/27/2007 3:51:49 PM |

Hate to break it to you, but both parties have people that want to break the constitution. It's all about personal gain.
For example(This is not comprehensive nor fully representative. Plz not to start flame war. I am not a fan of sweeping generalizations, but these are majority party alignments on issues from my perspective)
Dem's - Will stick up for 1st amendment rights and personal privacy to no end, but the 2nd amendment might as well be nonexistent. This appeals to social progressives and overprotective-mother types.
Repub's - Will fight all day for the above stated 2nd amendment, but would jump at the chance to enact blatantly anti-constitutional, personally invasive and suppressive laws like the "Patriot Act". This appeals to social conservatives and self-sufficient/higher-income types.
No, there is corruption ALL across the board, across ALL party lines. Money and greed fuel this machine, and politicians will say and do anything for a buck.
Feel free to correct me on any of this, as it was a rather hastily thrown together "cliff notes" of my opinions on this topic.

Are these supposed to be good things?
Progressive taxation - Wealth transfer, theft of labor.
Regulation of industry- If regulators couldn't prevent the Savings & Loans scandals, why do we think they could shield us from other cases of fraud or incompetence? Remember it was the US Dept of Agriculture who ordered some of the exit doors locked from the outside which caused the deaths of 25 people in that NC chicken-plant fire in 1991.
Consumer protection- The FDA's tardy approval of propranolol, the first beta blocker for heart disease, needlessly killed an estimated 30,000 Americans during the three years it was available in Europe. Some protection.
Affirmative action- Quotas, reverse discrimmination. Equality before the law?
Centralized government - Statism, runaway spending, Oppression of individual liberty. Public education - Gov't indoctrination. Warehousing of children. Teacher unions. 3/28/2007 10:02:00 PM |

Odd point though: Republican appointed Judges to the Supreme Court tend to be the best defenders of all the rights you've listed.
Go ahead and check which judges dissented from upholding Mccain Feingold which in effect made it illegal to criticise the government: Justice Scalia, Justice Thomas, and Justice Rehnquist. Every single one was nominated by a conservative president.
So, sure, Democrats may claim they love the 1st Amendment, but when it comes to putting people that feel the Government's powers should be limited anywhere they do very poorly compared to their brethren.3/28/2007 11:16:09 PM |

oh wow. thats just pathetic.
I will grant you that conservative justices on the supreme court have largely taken good positions on first amendment issues, but scalia is also the reason that religious intolerance is pretty much allowed.
