Quote : | "Researchers at a university built an environmentally-friendly racing car with tyres made from potatoes and brake pads from cashew nut shells.
Eco One is the idea of WMG, a provider of innovative solutions to industry based at the University of Warwick.
The car was designed originally with a top speed of 125mph (201km/h).
It will be at the Sexy Green Car Show alongside green offerings from major names in the motor industry at the Eden Project in Cornwall from Friday.
'Recyclable materials'
The car also runs entirely on bio-fuels and bio-lubricants.
Project manager Ben Wood said he has tweaked the original engine and claims he can achieve up to 150mph (241km/h) given a long straight and a tailwind.
He said: "Almost everything on the car can be made out of biodegradable or recyclable materials.
"All the plastic components can be made from plants and, although the chassis has to be made from steel for strength, steel is a very recyclable material.
"We already have the shell, brake pads, fuel and tyres sorted.
"My aim is to end up with a race car that's 95 per cent biodegradable or recyclable.
"If we can build a high-performance car that can virtually be grown from seed, just imagine what's possible for the average family car." " |

while i agree with the concept
how many of yall would trust your car to safely stop if the brake pads were made of cashew nut shells?] 3/29/2007 4:24:20 PM |

haha good point but the trust obviously would be earned after testing 3/29/2007 4:24:47 PM |

yeah just occurred to me when reading it
good idea though...and something like this doesnt get invented overnight...it just shows in some respects that alternative energy and more earth-friendly products are in development 3/29/2007 4:35:25 PM |

^Of course they're in development. This is in England, by the way.
Anyway, what's your point?
Nobody's sitting around bitching about how nothing's in development. They're more concerned that it's not enough, that we need to put more emphasis on development and research.

I am curious as to how they created a rubber-like mass from potatos. Should be interesting. 3/29/2007 4:57:03 PM |

My points is that this:

is a waste of words.
I mean, why bother saying that, if not to pat yourself on the back that progress is being made in the face of an ambivalent government and "agnostic" assholes like yourself?
OMG PROGRESS IS BEING MADE?!?! I THOUGHT BUSH AND CO. HAD BANNED PROGRESS. WELL SHIT, THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING!

err, did you not just say this was being developed in the UK and NOT the US??3/29/2007 5:06:08 PM |

^There's shit going on in the US, too.
Besides, that shit in caps is just an interpretation of the viewpoint of the nonexistent people TreeTwista10 is speaking to when he points out that development is underway. 3/29/2007 5:11:29 PM |

ironically it is found that the processes needed to manufacture such a car create greater pollution than those needed to construct an ordinary auto from traditional materials. Fortunately a government subsidy keeps the manufacturing economically viable so people can still buy the eco-friendly car and feel good about old mother earth.
Of course, a more obvious question is whether you want food from the UK?

ironically a person called mathman can't figure out the pollution reduction while running the car offsets the manufacturing processes

What happens if the car hits a patch of ketchup on the road?
If you don't drive it for awhile, will little spuds start growing out of the "tyres"?
Thank You...
