throwing the ball up in the air makes sense if you have a few seconds left and you dont want the other team to be able to foul you, send you to the line, and then get the ball back. Since the ball is still in bounds the clock still runs, and you can burn 3-4 seconds 4/3/2007 5:15:02 PM |

doing dunks like that is gay as fuck, if you ask me. if it's a fast break or something where he has some real momentum i understand, but he does it when he starts from right under the basket. it's just stupid. 4/3/2007 6:38:41 PM |

my only point is calling a tech, which can be a game changing call (see bullshit "failure to remove timeout chair/stool from floor in time" in NCSU Maryland ACC tourney game a couple years ago), on just a celebration play is dumb
If you wanna call a tech if a player cusses out a ref, go ahead If you wanna call a tech if a player fights/hits/punches/etc, go ahead If you wanna call a tech for defensive 3 seconds, go ahead
If you wanna call a tech for somebody going "Woo hoo!" after making a big dunk, thats about as gay as throwing a 15 yard flag for spiking the football...after a big touchdown
Back in the day they'd just let them play 4/3/2007 9:44:47 PM |

you're right...people in general were totally different back then...they were incapable of celebration 4/3/2007 9:59:51 PM |
simonn best gottfriend 28968 Posts user info edit post |
i'm not implying that right off the bat it should be a T, but if i'm the ref in that game, i'm telling oden if he keeps doing it on dunks that he starts from within one foot of the basket, he's getting T'd up. 4/3/2007 10:05:47 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148450 Posts user info edit post |
but why? if he kicks somebody in the head, T him up...if he hangs on the rim for more than a secon or two, T him up...but just for basically accentuating a dunk? come on cant they have a little fun if theyre not hurting anybody? 4/3/2007 10:07:13 PM |
simonn best gottfriend 28968 Posts user info edit post |
so you're okay with Ts for hanging on the rim for a second or two, but not okay with a warning first, then a T for what he does? how's it any different?
and i'm not saying all non standard two handed dunks should be a T, i'm all about a fancy dunk, but what he does is just stupid. and he does it every time, even when the game's already lost. 4/3/2007 10:10:51 PM |

do you ever actually consider the other side of the argument or do you always just jump straight to the hyperbole

first of all, the game wasnt already lost...if florida had actually missed a 3-pointer and OSU could actually make a 3-pointer, it wouldve immediately been a close game
i just think the message you're giving is to play in an exciting game with no emotion...which is dumb
Quote : | "bart starr was known for his cell phone antics after touchdowns" |
yeah because every single player in the NFL or NBA or NCAA is Chad Johnson and TO
what the fuck is wrong with celebrating? you guys want to watch sports with a bunch of emotionless robots? wow that sure is exciting
hope next time we beat UNC you dont rush the court...hope you just sit in your seats with your arms crossed
ps: the link IIDX posted is a perfect example of why you dont need to call a tech in that situation
plus the thread was halfway a joke in the first place

nothing is wrong with celebrating
that's why players aren't fined/penalized for celebrating
they are fined and/or penalized for excessive celebration 4/3/2007 10:17:00 PM |

FIRST OFF, i hope we don't too, b/c hopefully next time it's not as shocking.
SECOND OFF, you're comparing celebrating after the game to celebrating after every dunk you make as a center. very different.
and the dunk i'm thinking of, the game was most certainly lost.4/3/2007 10:17:05 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148450 Posts user info edit post |
i just dont think big dunks like that are excessive...if so, every single time shaquille o'neal has ever dunked...ever...he would get a technical
i just dont see the big deal...i'm like "wow what a powerful dunk" then i'm like "now lets see if they can stop florida"
are yall like "wow what a dunk...hey that pulling up is unneccesary...hey ref god dammit call something im offended"
now granted during that game during 2 or 3 plays i was like "im kind of surprised they didnt call oden for a technical"...but im glad they didnt...because it was meaningless to the overall game...and therefore not worth calling a technical over
i mean if you're down 10 points with 2 seconds left...its not necessarily over...you could get fouled on a 3...and have like 6 technicals against other players...but its just another sense of refs deciding the outcome instead of the players

he pulls up way more than shaq does. the thing is he pulls up so high that it's no longer a powerful dunk, or an extention of his dunk. he dunks it, and then does a chin up on the rim. every time. it's completely over the top.
and while it's a relatively weak point, as i recall he was close to landing on some guys a few times last night.

^that is a good point but oden impressed me with his stamina last night...played what, like 34-35 minutes?
although one foul that i clearly remember ( on an and-1 ) was certainly from fatigue
i still think that game came down to who made and missed 3-pointers (even though this thread isnt really about that) 4/3/2007 10:32:45 PM |
