I seriously thought Barnes would give Kentucky more consideration than Gillispie, but i was completely wrong. Barnes shot them down quickly and it looks like a Texas guy will actually leave the great state.

You don't turn down Kentucky when you coach at Texas A & M. Gillespie went from the bottom to the top in about 5 seasons, takes most coaches twice as long. Although i have to wonder why Rick banres likes Texas so much, makes him turning down Lil ole NC State not so noticeable now.

BARNES LIKES TEXAS BECAUSE THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM MAKES $$$ SO WHEN ALL THE BASKETBALL SCHOOLS WHO LOSE THEIR COACH THROW BIG BUCKS AT HIM UT CAN ALWAYS MATCH ANY OF THEIR OFFERS

^^, At some point, Barnes is going to want to win a national championship. Texas is certainly a good school with a great opportunity to do so, but it's not Kentucky, Uk has rabid fans, rabid alumni, and even a rabid faculty that wants titles every year. Kentucky needs to get back to recruiting the top guys, and with Barnes I bet they could have done so. Gillespie will also get them where they need to be. And with money, Kentucky will throw out whatever needs to be done, regardless of weather a basketball coach is currently at a football school generating mega revenue.

barnes just isn't a very good coach. it pains me to say this, but he's like roy williams lite: stud recruiter but lacking in game management. kentucky is much better served going with gillespie

BARNES CAN WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP IN TEXAS....LOOK AT FLORIDA....THEY CAN'T EVEN FILL THEIR ARENA DURING THE REGULAR SEASON......SURE TEXAS DOESN'T HAVE THE FOLLOWING KENTUCKY DOES BUT SHIT IF YOU CAN GET PAID THE SAME AND HAVE THE SAME CHANCE TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP AND NOT HAVE THE PRESSURE THEN WHY WOULD YOU LEAVE...

I THINK GILLISPIE LEAVING WAS A GOOD MOVE....THERE IS NO CHANCE TO WIN IT ALL AT A&M....THEIR IS WAY TOO MUCH SAUSAGE AT THAT SCHOOL (BAD FOR RECRUITING)....HE WILL BRING KENTUCKY BACK TO ITS USUAL DOMINACE IN TWO YEARS

I doubt Barnes will ever win a championship anywhere.

I can't imagine that Kentucky nation is overly pleased with this hire... I mean, Gillispie has barely proven himself.

On the contrary, I'd say Gillespie has done an absolutely stellar job at A&M.

His teams play great ball, and I think he'll do well.

probably right about that but... kansas shouldnt be smiling cause now they will breeze through the big 12 with only texas to battle and without strong competition they will enter the tourney again and again and choke against the competition... basically... "I" wouldnt be smiling

What basketball are you watching? He is the best coach in the NCAAs IMHO.

He turned UTEP and A&M around in only two years each.

bad hire.

making a bad team good is different from making a good team great.

^Your opinion means very little in this section now Dukie. He is the best available coach out there.

Who should they have hired, your boy Wojo?

Gainesville is 100 miles from anywhere, and over half of its' population is college students. The student section is always full, but a lot of season-ticket-holding alumni aren't going to drive in from Jacksonville, Orlando, or Tampa for a weeknight game, especially one that starts at 9:30 for ESPN. The weekend games are usually packed out.

that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard. it is FLORIDA...there are people everywhere with a vast number of them Gator fans. Being far from other cities sure hurts the attendance at the Big 12 schools too...

^^ Perhaps you've never been through that part of Florida, but it's quite rural. Gainesville is geographically isolated...there isn't another decent-sized city for an hour and a half in any direction.

Combine State and Carolina into a 50,000-student enormity, and put the campus in Asheville, Greenville, or Wilmington, and you have a pretty good comparison.

i cant even think of any state where the "STATE" school is the 'unc' of that state
like you could say "well ohio STATE" or Louisiana State is the premier sport school of that state, but there isnt a competing OHIO University or Louisiana really... And I do know that Michigan is the 'unc' of Michigan... I mean, I don't really know how to say this but maybe ya'll get what I'm tryin to say...

Michigan State, Arizona State and NC State are the closest I see to being strong STATE schools while having to deal with tough competition, and Kansas State was almost on their way but... recent actions seem to have prevented that

^^^ I think Michigan State is a better basketball school than Michigan, at least for the past decade.

Also, Arizona state has always sucked, I would put FSU way above them, in both sports. They are a bigger perennial football power than Florida, and occasionally field good basketball teams.

Texas A&M, or texas tech, could be considered 'state' type schools in a way, because they have to deal with Texas

miss state
wash state
rutgers
penn state

more things i noticed is that the ustate is usually in a college town and usually a liberal school while the STATE university is usually in the capital

Penn State doesn't count because Penn is private, so it's top dog.
Rutgers doesn't count because it's the oldest and most prestigious public university in the state.
Nither Mississippi State or Ole Miss have ever been any good at anything.
Washinton State is a pretty good one.

if you think carolina fans suck are douchebags, you've never met anyone from uva

they don't have the wal-mart element but anyone who has attended 'mr. jefferson's university' considers themselves head and shoulders above everyone else
